a successful year for
Practical Pedagogy

Now Join us in revisioning Practical Pedagogy for 2009-2010

It's time for Practical Pedagogy to do some rebuilding and revisioning. We took the first step in late May with a mission statement brainstorming meeting led by Tim Wright (History). This process is still very much under way, and we welcome and invite newcomers from all disciplines to get involved. Attached below are an audio recording of our meeting and a summary of the outcomes. Stay tuned to the listserv for more developments and opportunities to get involved.

SPRING QUARTER 2009 EVENTS

Tuesday, May 19, 12-2 pm, HUB, Room 209B

"
Questioning Our Tacit Teaching Personas"

The goal of this roundtable is to look closely at how we as teachers position ourselves in relation to our students. As new or early career educators, interrogating our culturally and institutionally learned, tacit assumptions regarding female students, queer students, students of color, students with disabilities, students who are non-native English speakers, working-class students, and non-traditional students often takes the back burner to "crisis"-level concerns: surviving the daily time crunch of teaching, completing graduate work and holding onto a life outside of school.

Rather than separate these "crises" from concerns with students' identities, this roundtable will discuss how the educational experiences we bring into the classroom structure our interactions with students. We will discuss these interactions by thinking about the teaching personas we inhabit and the classroom practices that we deploy. Facilitated by Angie Rounsaville and Suzanne Schmidt (English).

WINTER QUARTER 2009 EVENTS

New this quarter! Stay tuned to the listserv for an upcoming "Think and Drink" event.

Wednesday February 11, 3:30-5:00, CMU 202

"
Inclusive Teaching Practices for Supporting Students with Disabilities"

Did you know...

--vision, hearing, and mobility disabilities account for only 23% of students with disabilities?
--some students with disabilities intentionally avoid registering with disability services?

Insuring equal access to education for students with disabilities requires an understanding of the facts and issues surrounding college students with disabilities. Attention to pedagogy and classroom management is also needed. This workshop will provide insights into both and will help those in attendance develop an inclusive approach to teaching that supports students of all abilities. Workshop facilitator: Kate Deibel (Computer Science and Engineering).

Monday
March 2, 3:30-5:00, Suzzallo Room 562 East (5th floor)

"Break it Down to Build them Up: Improving Student Learning Through Constructive Assignment Design"

Do your students have difficulty finding scholarly sources, critically evaluating internet sources, or integrating evidence into their writing? Do you feel constrained from assigning research papers because of large class sizes?

Join us to discuss strategies for designing effective research assignments through approaches that isolate research competencies and scaffold the research process. We'll talk about creative, manageable enhancements and alternatives to the research paper that empower students to critically engage with the research process. Workshop facilitators: Deb Raftus (Romance Languages & Literatures Librarian) and Emily Keller (Political Science & Public Affairs Librarian).

PP RESEARCH: TEACHING AND TECHNOLOGY

Stop in at the CIDR Teaching and Learning Symposium April 21, 2:30-4:40, to experience a demonstration of Q6C: A Transdisciplinary Process for Teaching Online Research Practices.

Practical Pedagogy Research will give a panel presention, "Teaching Sustainable Online Research Practices Across the Curriculum: The Q6C Solution" at the Computers and Writing Conference 2009, June 16-19 at the University of California, Davis. Watch for our spring Practical Pedagogy workshop on the Q6C solution.
