A real history lesson! This thorough examination of the black fraternity and sorority legacy and the nine member organizations of the National Pan Hellenic Council makes it a must-have for every current and aspiring member.
Let the controversy begin! As if the story line wasn't enough, the author's use of specific fraternity letters on the front cover of this novel has caused major drama. According to the cover, Pledge Brothers is "a shocking tell-all book about friends that possess a burning desire to pledge a glorified fraternity. Willie Thompson bonds and embraces friendship with four guys (Harry, Noble, Timothy and Nick). Initially, Harry is the only one to get accepted to pledge the fraternity then he betrays his friends. The fraternity eventually opens its doors to Willie and the others due to Harry's whim, which is to make his ex-friends suffer. The Pledges survive the first night of living HELL, followed by weeks of unexplainable horror, all while encompassing a humorous aspect at times." The author is an alum of Texas A&M University.
Debutante cotillions. Million-dollar homes. Summers in
Martha's Vineyard. Membership in the Links, Jack & Jill, Deltas, Boule, and
AKAs. An obsession with the right schools, families, social clubs, and skin
complexion. This is the world of the black upper class and the focus of the
first book written about the black elite by a member of this hard-to-penetrate
group. Author and TV commentator Lawrence Otis Graham tells who's in and who's
not in the group today in this controversial book with separate chapters on
"The 'Right' Fraternities and Sororities" (Chapter 5), "Howard,
Spelman, and Morehouse: Three Colleges That Count" (Chapter 4), "The
Links and the Girl Friends: For Black Women Who Govern Society" (Chapter
6), and "The Boule, the Guardsmen, and Other Groups for Elite Black
Men" (Chapter 7). The author also presents individual chapters on the elite
in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta,
Philadelphia, Nashville, and New Orleans. Nonfiction; paperback

Black Greek 101
by Walter M. Kimbrough
Black
Greek 101 is the first book to provide a complete analysis of the culture of
historically Black fraternities and sororities. Based on over ten years of
research, Black Greek 101 presents a detailed history of Black fraternalism as a
whole. As a unique culture within the college environment, these organizations
are fascinating examples of the ways students form groups with their own
artifacts, rites, customs, stories, and rituals that help them to adapt to the
larger college environment. When members of Black fraternal organizations and
non-members alike finish Black Greek 101, they will have a foundation for
understanding some of the most interesting organizations that have influenced
not only campus culture, but American culture as a whole.
