Currently...

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Washington's Quantitative Ecology and Resource Management program. My interest is to eventually study archaeology, where I hope to apply archaeological data to current management problems as well as ecological theory to archaeological questions. I am finishing my second year, and my work on a master's project is underway. I am looking at hypotheses for the declines of Steller sea lions in Alaska.

Teaching

In the two year gap between my undergraduate and graduate education, I became a high school teacher at Educational Advancement Academy's (EA2) Factoria location. I taught a range of math classes, general science, physical science, physics, and health. EA2 is an unusual school, focusing on one on one instruction for a variety of educational needs. I had the opportunity to work with students with highly varied educational programs. Some of my students were there to work ahead in classes which were not offered in their local schools, while some had learning disabilities which required a focused educational approach.

Prior to my experience at EA2, I worked for three years at the University of Washington's Math Study Center, tutoring calculus and precalculus. I also worked for a year at Shoreline Community College's Math Learning Center, helping students with most of the math classes offered at SCC.

Perhaps my first experience with math or science education however, comes from my brief childhood foray into the recording industry. I was a one of the child sing-a-long singers on four tapes: Blast off, Dino dig, Metamorphosis, and (the "social science") Teddy Freddy.

I am an occasional volunteer editor on the open-source encyclopedia Wikipedia. I believe the project has a great goal--access to knowledge--but more than that, it has de facto become the starting point for a large number of high school school research project. Thus improving Wikipedia's coverage or accuracy of a topic has a pretty reasonable impact on the public understanding of a topic, perhaps more than other ways of expending effort to educate the public.

American, Idle

Outdoors, I think there is no better way to see Seattle than on a bike. Preferably, if it can be arranged, a visitor should specifically request a very old and beat up bike, to achieve the full richness of the experience. In addition to biking, I rather enjoy jogging, and if it is sunny out, juggling.

Pronunciation

My first name, Hans, is pronounced with an "ah" sound, rhyming with Dons or Sean's. My last name, Nesse, rhymes with "messy."
