The Project
ASTRACT/CONCEPTUAL OVERVIEW
This project is about the translation of one experience into another. In the telling of a personal story or past event a new experience must be born of that translation/retinterpretation. What began as a sesory engagement with a device (camera) translating the world in its eye is transposed to a new real-time experience of The aim is to maintain the system of anticipation fed back though one's immediate memory trying to grasp fleeting moments. The work constantly shifts from direct observation of an anticipated result, leaving the viewer with only their own motivations in view.
PROJECT DETAILS / THE EXPERIENCE
Video/Sound
The video consists of 5 channels: 4 being the system of "ehoes" of a single source video, while one (the small LCD) is shifting color fields with it's origins in the single source video for the other channels. The 4-channel series is simply a progressive delay of the original video, unedited aside from that achieved through interactions. The color field video will be slightly processed and edited as needed to lend to the composition.
The audio consists of 5 corresponding channels: 4 (one for each screen) draw from the source audio of the original video and is slightly filtered, meandering and delayed in a manner analogous to the visual time distortions. The 5th channel consists of a tangential but experiencially-related audio drawing in details of the original personal experience. The audio is frozen in time aside from shifts imposed by the video. This 5th channel is also subtly present in the other 4, while the other 4 are subtly present in the 5th.
Interaction
A system of proximity sensors allow the viewers to subtly affect both the video and audio elements. 4 sensors correspond to the four audio/video channels and serve to increase the amplitude of the corresponding audio channel triggered, attenuating the others allowing the "bleedthrough" of the 5th to become bairly audible in the other channels. This serves as both a break in the continuity of the audio directional "flow" and provides a general distraction from the flow of the experience.
If the 5th node is triggered, the other 4 audio channels are overriden (by gentle transition) letting the bleedthrough be heard in low volutmes and one video channel becomes misaligned from the other 3. If the system is left alone long enough, it returns to it's original state.
