Class Work

Personal Introduction

Hello everyone, Professor Krumme. My name is Michalis Avraam and I am a 3rd year student at the University of Washington, majoring in Geography, concentrating on GIS, with an interest in Political and Economic Geography as well. I have taken various Geography classes all aiming to fulfill my curiosity in Geography.

I am an International Student, coming from Cyprus (a small island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea), which provides me with an adequate background to compare and contrast the different approaches to Economic Development. I would be more than happy to share my own experiences with anyone interested in the subject.

My expectation from this class is to gain a basic understanding of how economics blend with space and this can be used in a geographic context using technology (mainly GIS).

I have previous programming experience in various programming, scripting and formatting languages, including C, C++, Perl, bash, (X)-HTML and LaTeX. I am also willing to help anyone that needs some help, even though I have a tight schedule.

I do plan to attend all lectures, of course if the circumstances permit it. The fact that I have a class before this may delay me for a few minutes, and I hope that will not cause an inconvenience to anyone.

Overall, I am glad I am taking this class and I am looking forward in working with all of you in the near future.

Week 2 Exercise

Whether you want to look at production means, trade means or even ways to exchange capital and ideas, the change of the past century has been bigger that the change of the last millenium. This evident in the corresponding textbooks concerning Economic Geography, therefore I will study three of them at various stages of the past century and indicate the changes. [read more...]
