FAQ

This is the FAQ for the Math Club at the University of Washington. If your question is not satisfactorily answered here, please feel free to email us at uwmathclub at gmail.

General Membership Information

How can I join the UW Math Club?

E-mail uwmathclub at gmail or sign up by visiting the getting involved page. We have a mailing list for upcoming events and news. It is important that you either e-mail or sign up on our webpage because we maintain a current list of members. Note that being a member does not mean you must attend every single event.

(Note: we have discontinued the online members list due to our new mailing system and privacy concerns. The list of members is maintained internally by the math club. If you are signed up for the mailing list, then you are a member.)

Why do I have to sign in when I attend a Math Club event?

For administrative reasons regarding paying for food, we are required to submit these names to the UW Math Department.

Who is the Math Club Advisor?

William Stein of the UW Math Department is our advisor.

I have an idea for an event that the Math Club could do. How should I express this?

Any ideas, suggestions, or questions are welcome at uwmathclub at gmail.

Are there mandatory meetings for Math Club members?

We are aware that most of our members have very busy schedules. Out of respect for this, we do not have mandatory meetings. In fact, we don't even have weekly meetings like most other math clubs; we have several events throughout the quarter. However, we highly encourage members to attend as many events as possible, because getting to know each other is one of the best parts about this club.

Are there payments/dues I have to pay in order to be a Math Club member?

No. We do not require membership fees. The University of Washington funds our events and projects.

Officers

Who are the current Math Club officers?

The following are the 2011-2012 officers:

  • President: Elizabeth Lewis
  • Vice President: Jerry Cheng
  • Secretary: Dylan Wilson
  • Treasurer: Mohammad Mufti
  • Webmaster: Dan Gnanapragasam

You can find out more on the officers page.

How can I become a Math Club officer?

Officers are chosen by active club members during annual elections. Officer positions are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and webmaster. Candidates indicate the position they wish to serve, and a vote is taken for each officer position. Candidates may be asked to give a short speech about their qualifications, goals and thoughts.

The president of Math Club should be a math major (except under special circumstances) but being a math major is not required to run for other positions.

The next election will be held late Spring Quarter of 2012. (Exact date to be announced.)

Can current Math Club officers endorse candidates?

Yes. Traditionally, if the current officers unanimously feel strongly for a candidate, they may endorse. However, endorsements do not ensure election. Regardless of endorsements, elections are democratically held, with each member having a vote for each position.

Other Questions

Are companies allowed to sponsor the Math Club?

No. The Math Club is an officially registered student organization at the University of Washington, and receives adequate funding from the university.

What are Department Dinners?

Department dinners have been sponsored by the Math Club for the past few years. It is a chance for math graduate students, math majors, math-related majors, and math professors enjoy dinner and casual conversation at a nearby restaurant. (More information about 2011-2012 Department Dinners will be available toward the end of the quarters.)

Can math graduate students join?

Graduate students are very welcome for their advice and knowledge. We currently do have some graduate student members.
