Outreach
Outreach sessions are presented to a variety of student (K - 12, and community college) and parent audiences using demonstration kits and PowerPoint presentations. Please contact our Events Coordinator to organize an outreach event for your class or science fair.
Open Window School's Invention Convention - Issaquah, WA 2007
From the director of the Invention Convention event:
A HUGE “Thank You” for hosting a fabulous exhibit at our Invention Convention event. The children were so engaged (as were the parents) and really enjoyed all your exhibits. I heard some parent say that they loved having UW engineering students there and the exhibits were engaging and fun. Several children thought that the marshmallows were the best part of the event! The general feeling was that the Invention Convention was a huge success and the kids loved it. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! We had approximate 190 children attend the event and around 400 total attendees. Thanks for helping make it a success!
Kennydale Elementary - Renton, WA 2006
Puget Sound Engineering Council's Engineering Week Fair 2006
Held at the Museum of Flight in Seattle

2005-2006: John Morris, Shane Boyd, Tom Tillotson and Eileen Eng talked to a group of physics students from teacher Nick Cabot's class. The students were very interested the composites that we brought as well as the shape memory alloys. They had questions about college life and what we were studying. We did some liquid nitrogen demos and gave our presentation about some of the more fundamental ideas of material properties.
The trip was a success!
Thank you to Nick Cabot for inviting us!
Chief Sealth High School - Seattle, WA
2005-2006: Chief Sealth High school was lucky enough to have two of our MSE junior class as presenters, Sugih Wiyono and Chris Petz, as well as a MSE senior Heather McGee. The students were very interested in Materials Science. We brought along some composite materials and our Space shuttle tile.
This experience allowed high school students to learn about materials and to get interested in going to college. It was as informative for the presenters as it was for the students. Way to go guys!
Thanks to Chief Sealth High School students and staff for letting us come and show you why Material Science Rocks!
Chris Petz (in the hat) shows Cheif Sealth students the difference in
material properties between aluminum and polymer plastic wrap then
explains how the difference affects how we use the materials.
Heather McGee (glasses) shows a student part of our presentation and
explains a little about the fundamental properties of different
materials.
Lake Forest Park Elementary - Seattle, WA
2005-2006:
Science night at Lake Forest Park elementary was a blast. John Morris,
Tom Tillotson, Meaghan Lee, Zablong Yang, Ian Hamby, and Aaron Wahlborg
visited Lake Forest park elementary to show the kindergarden through 6th
graders just how cool material science is.
We brought liquid nitrogen and lots of things to freeze. We also had
many different types of composites which were very popular. There was
the superconductor levitation trick as well as the space shuttle ceramic
tile. The kids had lots of great questions about the different materials
and got very excited, but I think their parents learned the most from
our explanations.
There were quite a few different groups there showing everything from
environmental science to reptiles:
From left to right: Zablong Yang, Tom Tillotson, Aaron Wahlborg and John
Morris with the giant yellow boa brought by the reptile lady.

University of Washington MSE Professor Sarikaya was also there checking
out the giant boa!
Thank you Lake Forest Park Elementary staff and students for your interest, you guys are awesome!
