Who We Are

Established in 1999, UW MAPS is a chapter of the national organization Minority Association of Pre-Health Students. UW MAPS is affiliated with the parent group, the National Medical Association and the Student National Medical Association.

MAPS: Minority Association of Pre-medical Students represents the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students of SNMA. Maps members are considered national associate members and make up about one third of SNMA's 5000 count membership. MAPS chapters are spread throughout the country at over 150 undergraduate institutions.

NMA: The NMA promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent. We carry out this mission by serving as the collective voice of physicians of African descent and as a leading force for parity in medicine, elimination of health disparities, and promotion of optimal health.

SNMA: When African American physicians were prohibited to join the NMA, in 1964, the SNMA was formed to represent the collective voice of minority physicians INCLUDING African Americans. SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization formed on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. SNMA is dedicated both to ensuring culturally sensitive medical education and services, as well as increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school.

UW MAPS is one of the few active university chapters in the nation.
