I am currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington, completing my dissertation research under Dr. James Feathers, with additional committee members Dr. Eric Alden Smith, Dr. Carl T. Bergstrom, and Dr. Marcos Llobera.

I am also working as Product Unit Manager, Content Delivery Services at GridNetworks, Inc. GridNetworks provides high-definition, full-screen video delivery to major media and content publishers, and our goal is to power what is increasingly called "Internet Television" — the convergence of media from computers, TV's, DVR's, and DVD/VCR's onto a single platform capable of being viewed in a variety of home or mobile contexts.

I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 1988, in the Department of Anthropology and with College and Departmental Honors. I graduated with a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990, and returned to the University of Washington as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow to pursue a Ph.D. from 1990-1995.

From 1995 through 2006, I worked as an engineer, manager, and executive at a variety of software and data networking companies. I was the second software engineer hired at RealNetworks to develop server technology, and an early employee at Internap Network Services. I co-founded Emergent Media/AllRecipes.com with Carl P. Lipo, Tim Hunt, Michael Pfeffer, David Quinn, and Dan Shepherd, and served on the board of Allrecipes.com until its acquisition in 2006 by Reader's Digest. I co-founded Network Clarity in 2002 with Christopher D. Wheeler, and served as VP of Engineering along with Chris and Tony Naughtin until 2005. During late 2005 and early 2006 I worked in new product development at Microsoft in the Windows Enterprise Management Division, as a Lead Program Manager.

Since 1999, I have worked with Samuel D. Long and a small group of investors at Pinpoint Venture Group, an early stage venture investment partnership. Our portfolio includes several successful acquisitions, including Performant, Allrecipes.com, and Terabeam, as well as successful business models at DisplayScape Media and eProject. In addition to serving on the board at Allrecipes.com, I had an observer role on the board of Performant, Inc until its acquisition by Mercury Interactive.

My archaeological field experience includes 5 years working with Dr. Robert C. Dunnell in the central Mississippi River Valley, Dr. Julie K. Stein at English Camp in the San Juan Islands of Washington State, and with Drs. Mark Kenoyer and George Dales at Harappa in Pakistan. Additionally, I spent two years as Project Manager for Woods Cultural Research, handling Native American relations with the PGT/PG&E Pipeline Expansion Project across 18 groups in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and California.

I am currently a resident of the San Juan Islands of Washington State. I write and maintain a personal website (listed in the menu to left under Blog), and store my photography at Flickr. I will occasionally discuss research-oriented topics on the blog, in addition to personal reflections.
