The world says no to war

The United for Peace of Pierce County is sponsoring activities on Feb. 15 when United for Peace and Justice has called for nation-wide activities around the theme “The World Says No to War.”

The day begins at 1 p.m. with live music and speakers at a McKinley Park rally, located across I-5 from the Tacoma Dome at S. D St. and S. 32nd.

The march will then go from the park to Tacoma’s Federal Building at the old Union Station. The park is accessible from Pierce Transit bus #42.

Another event that day running from 4-6 p.m. will be a multicultural Celebration of Peace at the Washington State History Museum, located at 1911 Pacific Avenue. A wide variety of Pierce County’s ethnic and cultural groups will represent their communities’ longing for peace through music, dance, art and the spoken word.

Sponsors for the event are the United for Peace Pierce County and the Tacoma Chapter of the Fellowship and Reconciliation.

Other cities around the world that will be in celebration of peace on this day: Stockholm, Amsterdam, Ramallah, Berlin, Bangkok, Olympia, Athens, London and Belfast.

Slots open for study abroad Mexico

The UWT Study Abroad programs has extended their deadline to Feb. 15 for the trip to Mexico.

Information about the program is available on the Urban Studies Web page and application forms are available on the site. Professor Cynthia Duncan will take students to Mexico in June. The month-long summer trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico is intended to immerse students in the Spanish language and culture. The trip is estimated to cost registered students over $2,000.

Work-study position open

The Office of Student Life currently has an opening for a work-study position for up to 19 hours a week at $9/hour.

This position is expected to enhance the level of support services provided to all student organizations, associations, societies, and publications.

Duties and responsibilities include: clerical support, data entry, inventory and supply management, database expenditure tracking, bulletin board posting, student service, campus distribution and other duties as assigned.

Applications will be accepted Feb. 5-Feb. 17. Drop off your resume and a copy of your award letter to the Office of Student Life.

Auditions for commencement speaker, vocalist

With the graduation ceremony around the corner, the graduation committee is looking for graduating seniors interested in speaking for 5-10 minutes at the commencement on any topic (approved by the committee) and also for a vocalist to perform the national anthem.

Students, staff and faculty are welcomes to audition.

Auditions for the vocalist will be held on Feb. 19 during the lunch hour and auditions for the speakers will be held during the second week of March.

Sign up for the Shakespeare Festival

The second annual UWT excursion to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland will take place June 24-26.

Up to twenty students can earn two credits, which can be counted towards a June graduation.

Up to twenty-five faculty, staff and students interested in the trip can be accommodated without the credits. Depending on space available the trip could possibly be open to spouses, family and friends joining.

Four plays total will be featured, three by Shakespeare “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Richard II” and one by American playwright David Edgar, the world premiere of “Daughters of the Revolution.”

Excluding meals and tuition the trip’s estimated cost is $430, assuming a private bed in a shared room.

Library display offers prize

The UWT Library has a new display where all UWT students, faculty and staff may enter to win a $50 gift certificate to the University Bookstore.

The contest involves reading about the life and writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Browse the collection of Tolkien materials in the display cases and try translating Tolkien’s elvish.

Entry forms, hints and rules are located at the display near the Reference Desk.
