One-credit courses at UW
As a tuition-exempt student, I have found that we sometimes need to take a one-credit, nongraded class that isn't too time-consuming. Here is my list. Please send me your suggestions.
  • ENVH 580, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SEMINAR. Weekly one-hour lecture on topics ranging from the political to technical. Hardly any out-of-class work. Meets on South Campus.

  • ENVH 593 CURRENT TOPICS-RISK, taught every quarter. Look for the quarters that feature risk communication. It’s a journal club, so there is quite a bit of reading and one presentation to prepare. Meets weekly for about half the quarter (five sessions). Meets off-campus on Roosevelt.

  • HSERV 554 HEALTH LEGISLATIVE SEMINAR, taught winter quarter. The five sessions center around an Olympia field trip. Meets on South Campus. If Patricia Lichiello is teaching it, she's great.

  • PHG 580 INTERACTIVE SEMINAR, public health genetics. Meets 5 times during the quarter on South Campus. Explores ethical issues in science.

  • SOC W 598 INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR, Nancy Amidei's class in policy advocacy – it’s practice, not theory. Fall quarter focuses on local government, winter on state, and spring on federal. Great activist energy. Meets weekly in the late afternoon, across 15th at the School of Social Work.

  • TC 521 CURRENT ISSUES IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION. This is a lecture on topics such as usability and web navigation, followed by snacks. Meets weekly in one of the engineering buildings.
