AIMS could fund/organize this.. they wouldn't be "AIMS" shirts, they'd be MSIM shirts (which we could use as a fundraiser to raise money for more MSIM events (like the BBQ)). I am definitely interested in pushing this on our agenda this year. I encourage interested students to come to the AIMS meetings and bring this topic up. I think there was even talk of having a t-shirt/hoodie/whatever design contest.

Can we get a section for technical/homework related questions? For example, if I am having a problem with some code, it would be nice to be able to get the help of the class.

Question from Josiah

Anyone have thoughts or heard anything interesting about Efthi's IMT 542 class?

Josiah 4
Last reply on 2009-10-27 by anonymous

It's a painful class. Beware. While it's a decent overview for what search is, the project will cause you neverending headaches because Efthi likes to shift the parameters on you CONSTANTLY so that you never know which end's up.

2009-06-17 Independent Study Which Prof?
Question from Nick M

Hi Folks,
I'm interested in taking an independent study in the fall quarter. I would like to study either business process management, particularly existing practices and systems, or systems analysis theory. I'm not sure which professors work in these areas. I still need to narrow down my topic, but I'd like some feedback on what professors you all think might be good to work with on these topics.

I don't know if your interested in Advanced XML, but Bob Boiko might do an Independent Study for that.

2009-09-04 Info 481
Question from Aditi

Hi,
I would be starting MSIM this fall and was wondering if Info 481 is worth while. It seems interesting but it's in the undergraduate infomatics program. Don't want to take a course that is really easy and is not a value add. Would the imt 588 be a better option?

Also, has anyone taken the IMT 551 - Foundations Org IA course? . It's handled by Barbara Endicott.. Any inputs on the prof and course would eb great!

Thanks!

Hazel's via Kathy Wong words:

INFO 481 - Project Management for Informatics - is a 4th year course which can be taken by both advanced undergrads and by masters students and is accepted as part of the MSIM program. It takes students through all the basic PM principles and develops skills in MS Project s/w. In particular, you'll gain familiarity with the basic PM concepts such as work breakdown structures (WBS) and project schedules (network diagrams and critical paths), and learn how to use Microsoft Pro...

2009-08-01 Parking options and suggestions
Question from Aditi

Hi everybody,

I've heard parking is close to impossible in campus. I plan to drive on certain days ( probably abt 4 times/ week max). What do you guys suggest? Is getting the parking pass ( works out to abt 300$/ quarter) my only option for reliable parking? It seems a little too much to be paying for 2 yrs!

Aditi 3
Last reply on 2009-08-12 by Kayhan

I used to park in the fenced area right next mgh and never got ticketed. Now it is torn down. My suggestion is if you see cars parking somewhere really convenient and it doesn't have a zone requirement, go for it until you get a ticket.

2009-07-10 Any suggestions for elective this fall?
Question from Aditi

I'm officially starting MSIM this fall ( took IMT 530 last winter qrtr with ur batch) and was wondering what elective would you recommend I start off with? Mike suggested the Proj Management course, but I've heard not so good things abt this course offered in the ISchool and that I'd be better of taking it form the B-School.
Looking to hear you views :-)

Thanks!

Last reply on 2009-07-25 by Rachel

I agree with Mike with it matters what you're interested in.

Personally, I am deciding between HCDE 517 (Usability Testing), LIS 519 SPEC TOP INFO BEHAV (The Personas class), IMT 583 (Financing). While the first two are pretty niche, the financing class has been highly recommended from the previous cohort. Plus it's taught by Kevin and doesn't look to have any pre-reqs. There's so many classes offered in autumn (I wish I could take like 5 of them) that I think you should go with a class you really t...

2009-06-26 Tips for Intern
Question from Shreyas Verma

How do u guys think one should behave as an Intern? I am a little nervous and any of your comments and experiences so far ...would be helpful. Thanks

Shreyas Verma 3
Last reply on 2009-06-30 by Jasper

Your nervousness is because you are doing something new in a new environment. That's only normal and will fade away when the first days and weeks pass.

As far as behavior goes:
- Always be polite and respectful to your new colleagues.
- Remember the following proverb/saying: "Speaking is silver, silence is gold", meaning that it is wise to listen to others before speaking yourself (in this case your new and experienced colleagues). But also feel confident to add to the conversation.
- Don't be afraid ...

2009-06-10 Can anyone share successful interview tactics?
Question from Jasper

As I'm still searching for an internship I started to analyze the feedback from my interviews in order to understand why my efforts are without success so far.

I see myself as a technically skilled information professional capable of working independently as well as in/with teams, and that is how I present myself during interviews. But I get turned down on not having the specific technical skills for some of these positions (or not being able to present them in a convincing manner). My technical skill ba...

I am not really qualified to answer ..but i would mention two things...
First ..try to project that you can learn the new technology or skills u r asked in the job ..(if u think u can)
Second and may be the most important one...try to bring relevant project experiences that might demonstrate your skills that are similar to the job you are applying to ... I have tried these and it worked for me.
Hope this helps..

2009-05-07 INFX 542, prototype or kbase?
Question from anonymous

I know that during finals week I was hearing from some of you that I should take the prototype track and that the Kbase track was extremely difficult.
Now, with some distance from that experience would you still suggest
the same? Do you know of anyone without a programming background who felt very satisfied to make it through the Kbase or is a programming background an integral part of being successful doing Kbase?

anonymous 3
Last reply on 2009-05-27 by Rachel

Though I was cursing it every other day, I loved that kBase, man. When I was done I went to it daily, sighing with admiration.

I wouldn't do the kBase unless you have some benevolent programming friends that will dedicate their Saturday afternoons to help you if you don't have *any* experience with programming.

That was the silly, but truthful response.

2009-07-15 Online INFX 501 to 504 courses
Question from Megha Thakkar

I am an incoming MSIM student starting this Autumn Quarter 2009. I am thinking to take INFX501 (1 credit) in the Fall quarter as an elective. Does anyone know if this is a good option? Also, any idea if this one or any other online courses are good?

501 is about basic knowledge of JavaScript. It would be helpful if you know something about Html and haven't touched this area yet. If you have CS background, this is probably too easy for you.

Question from Rachel

I've heard that some of the HCDE classes overlap Jake's (IMT540) class a lot (or maybe like one or two of them do...).

Has anyone taken classes over at HCDE? What was your experience?

2009-05-26 Project management classes in the fall
Question from anonymous

are any of the PM classes in the Fall any good? I know there are some offered in the Spring that have gotten good reviews.

anonymous 2
Last reply on 2009-06-09 by anonymous

I took Hazel's INFO 481 last fall too. I didn't find it to be a terribly useful class. First of all, I think that a lot of the methods for project management that were taught to us during the class are out of date. Second, I think that the final exam materials didn't correspond at all with the materials that were lectured on (covered in class), and this frustrated me.

Overall, I've heard better things about the PM class in the b-school. I would try and take this course if you can wait

2009-05-21 How did you like IMT 582 (Strategic Information Initiatives)?
Question from Rachel

I have heard some really good feedback about this class from different classmates of mine. Since I am not a business oriented person (I want to be a UX designer), I wasn't sure at first that this class would really be relevant for me. However, I have heard that it is useful for learning how to sell your ideas, which is important, since numerous classes have mentioned how UX designers sometimes need to be evangelists. Last reply on 2009-06-02 by Mike

Jasper, any course related to information management in any program on campus is fair game for an elective, as long as it doesn’t replicate something you’ve already taken or could take in the iSchool. INFX 542 and CSE544 (or CSE 444, the upper division undergrad version of the course) are all similar classes. Each is designed to introduce you to the basics of databases and logical modeling—the iSchool course is slanted toward the information perspective, the CSE courses toward the techno...
