2009-07-10 Any suggestions for elective this fall?
Question from Aditi

I'm officially starting MSIM this fall ( took IMT 530 last winter qrtr with ur batch) and was wondering what elective would you recommend I start off with? Mike suggested the Proj Management course, but I've heard not so good things abt this course offered in the ISchool and that I'd be better of taking it form the B-School.
Looking to hear you views :-)

Thanks!

I agree with Mike with it matters what you're interested in.

Personally, I am deciding between HCDE 517 (Usability Testing), LIS 519 SPEC TOP INFO BEHAV (The Personas class), IMT 583 (Financing). While the first two are pretty niche, the financing class has been highly recommended from the previous cohort. Plus it's taught by Kevin and doesn't look to have any pre-reqs. There's so many classes offered in autumn (I wish I could take like 5 of them) that I think you should go with a class you really t...

2009-06-01 HCDE classes... any good?
Question from Rachel

I've heard that some of the HCDE classes overlap Jake's (IMT540) class a lot (or maybe like one or two of them do...).

Has anyone taken classes over at HCDE? What was your experience?

One of the teachers i work for, Julie Kientz, has a joint appointment with HCDE. she's very good about answering questions, and if she doesn't' know, she should be able to find someone who does.

Question from Mayuko

Do anyone know about these HCI related courses? How is different among these course? Is there overlap with IMT540? Or do you know any other CHI related courses?

I don't know anything about the Fall courses, but I just received this about Summer courses and maybe worth following up:

The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering is offering two HCI-related courses this summer, HCDE 438 (Web Technologies) and HCDE 537 (User-Centered Web Design). Students interested in HCDE 438 should contact the instructor (listed below). Students interested in HCDE 537 should contact me (gbruno@u.washington.edu).

2009-05-08 Can I take an elective from the CSE department?
Question from Jasper

I am looking specifically at the course Principles of database systems, CSE 544.
How is this class different that the iSchool elective INFX 542, Conceptual database design?

Jasper, any course related to information management in any program on campus is fair game for an elective, as long as it doesn’t replicate something you’ve already taken or could take in the iSchool. INFX 542 and CSE544 (or CSE 444, the upper division undergrad version of the course) are all similar classes. Each is designed to introduce you to the basics of databases and logical modeling—the iSchool course is slanted toward the information perspective, the CSE courses toward the techno...
