Question:
Hi,
I would be starting MSIM this fall and was wondering if Info 481 is worth while. It seems interesting but it's in the undergraduate infomatics program. Don't want to take a course that is really easy and is not a value add. Would the imt 588 be a better option?

Also, has anyone taken the IMT 551 - Foundations Org IA course? . It's handled by Barbara Endicott.. Any inputs on the prof and course would eb great!

Thanks!

I haven't take 481 but I hear if you don't have any experience with Project management its a good class and even if you just want a refresher I hear from people its a good class.
I have taken IMT 551 and I liked it but I am a little biased because I am going into Information Assurance/Computer Security. Barbara is a very good teacher who cares more about you understanding the material then anything else. Its a good class to take if you want to get an introduction to how businesses handle Information Assurance and how Computer Security Policies are made. NOt a hard class but you learn alot. Email me if you want specifics about IMT 551.

Hazel's via Kathy Wong words:

INFO 481 - Project Management for Informatics - is a 4th year course which can be taken by both advanced undergrads and by masters students and is accepted as part of the MSIM program. It takes students through all the basic PM principles and develops skills in MS Project s/w. In particular, you'll gain familiarity with the basic PM concepts such as work breakdown structures (WBS) and project schedules (network diagrams and critical paths), and learn how to use Microsoft Project software for managing projects. It gives you a sound foundation of all the basic PM principles needed to implement information systems on time and within budget, concentrating on methods and issues of organizing, planning, and controlling projects, and the use of computer-based project management tools.

IMT588 is an advanced course and it builds on knowledge of the basic PM principles covered in INFO481. For IMT588 I assume that all students can develop WBS, network diagrams, critical paths, etc. and understand how to do this in MS Project or similar s/w, and that you understand the basic steps involved in managing a project through the project life cycle of planning, executing, delivering a project. In IMT588, we take a more theoretical approach and examine theory and research on critical and emerging project management issues including the relationship between project management and topics such as: organizational culture, structure, and processes; cross-functional and globally distributed teams; project governance, metrics, and risk and performance management; communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution; organizational learning, change and knowledge management.

So, in a nutshell, if you haven't done a PM course before, don't know MS Project, and don't have any significant industry experience then INFO 481 is the right course for you. If you know how to use MS Project, and have either taken a PM course before or have some serious industry experience in project management, then come to IMT588.

I thought INFO 481 wasn't a bad class at all. The work load is not too light and the weekly case study assignments and final test will not be easy if you don't do any self study. Hazel's classes are engaging and stimulate in-class participation. The lab classes were less interesting but I still picked up some practical skills there.

This class might no be your best pick if you already have PM skills or have taken PM classes before.

To my knowledge INFO 481 is a prerequisite for Hazel's IMT 588. But contact Hazel directly to be sure.

I don't know anything about IMT 551.
