More than 700,000 women will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and nearly 70,000 will die from breast and gynecologic cancers.

The repercussions of cancer are felt by mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, partners and husbands, co-workers and friends.

I’d like to invite all the various members of the iSchool to join me in running or walking in the 5k course for the Walk of Hope on the October 3rd. What a way to start the academic year – raising attention and awareness for all the various types of deadly cancers that plague women in particular.

The Cause
Eight cities. One mission. Curing women’s cancers.

The 2010 Walk for Hope looks to the eight national walks as an opportunity to raise necessary funds to continue groundbreaking research at City of Hope and to raise awareness of the severity of women’s cancers today. Without funds, research is impossible. And without research, the cure to cancer is a far away dream.
By expanding our walk to support all women’s cancers, we have decided to take on the responsibility of raising more funds and awareness for not only breast cancer, but gynecological cancers as well. We are taking a stand to beat the cancers that kill our mothers, sisters, and daughters every day.
We chose purple as our official Walk for Hope color because purple is the official color of ALL cancers. As we expand our walks to help more women, we look to purple as a representative of all women who have been affected by breast and gynecological cancers. Purple is a powerful yet feminine color that we believe defines our survivors and their families. We are proud to call purple our color.
United, we rally behind the purple ribbon for cancer awareness. And together, we work toward the day when women’s cancers are a thing of the past.
