Aims Site Updated!

Hey guys, this is Michael, the AIMS Technology officer.  I would like to enform you about two awesome opportunities coming up in the next month.  If you have any questions or comments about either please feel free to comment below.

Upcoming Event

The first is happening on this Friday, December 4th at 2:00pm in the Mary Gates Hall room 420.  One of the things that I personally found difficult is how to get results from a career fair.  On Friday Kevin DeSouza has agreed to talk about his experience with career fairs.  Kevin has had multiple companies which have hired from various career fairs so he knows what companies are looking for and what will make you stand out.  It is a great way to get a leg-up on other people that will be there.  He is asking that those who attend bring their resume, three companies that they want to work for and a two minute elevator speech.  I would suggest that you go to the list of companies that will be at the career fair in January.  You can find that list on the iSchool Webpage.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Help enhance the AIMS Website!

As you can tell the Aims layout has been updated but one thing you may not know is that we are now using Wordpress as a backend.  This has come after some help from fellow students.  The current layout is only a placeholder until we get a new student layout created.  Starting in January I will be starting two groups to enhance the website.  The first will be creating a permanent layout/design for this website.  The other group will be changing the sites Information Architecture.  This group will have to keep in touch with the design group but I want to make this project purely student run.  I will be there for help and advice but I would like you to take the lead on both of these endeavors.  Both of these projects don’t have to be in addition to your school work.  If you are in a class that has a final project that can be used for either of these then by all means take it on.  I just ask that you keep me in the loop so I know what is going on.  This is also a good opportunity for those of you who would want to take over as Aims Technology officer to see what I actually do and if it is something you would want to do.

Sorry this is so long but if you are interested in either project or have questions about the event on Friday feel free to post a comment, we will be monitoring this so we promise to answer!!

Student Funding Available

by Nick Malone

Do you have a great idea for a student event, want to travel to a conference, or throw an alumni event?

There are several exciting funding possibilities available students and student orgs at this time.  There are funds available for student events, alumni events, and conference travel.  Here’s some of the funds available and where you can learn more about accessing them.  Don’t worry if you’re not a member of a student org.  Many of the orgs, AIMS included, would love to help you with your idea.

Student Leadership Council

The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is composed of representatives from AIMS, IUGA, ALISS, and the PhD Association.  The SLC has a combined pool of around $5,000 for student events.  This can be used for almost any student activity available to all iSchool students.  Funding guidelines are soon to be published, but don’t let that stop you from applying for funding now.

More information:  Student Leadership Council, ischool-slc@u.washington.edu, and Wendy Phillips, Director of Student Services, wrp@uw.edu

Robert M & Marilyn G Mason Endowed Fund for Student Innovation in Information & Society

The Mason Endowed fund is a yearly endowment that makes up to $600 available for any student planning an event that involves innovation in information and society.  This could be a seminar, symposium, conference, speaker series, or anything else that involves innovation in information management or science.

More information:  Lane Hatfield, Assistant Director for Advancement, lhatfiel@uw.edu

Alumni Events Funding

The Information School’s Office of Advancement has a pool of money available for student run events involving alumni.  If you have an event that targeted at both students and alumni, the Office of Advancement may be able to provide funds for your event.

More information:  Lane Hatfield, Assistant Director for Advancement, lhatfiel@uw.edu

Student Travel Funds

The Information School has a pool money available for students traveling to conferences, symposiums, etc…  The funds can be used help pay for airfare and are available to all iSchool students, although it has traditionally been used mostly for PhDs.

More information:  Wendy Phillips, Director of Student Services, wrp@uw.edu

Welcome to all returning as well as new AIMS members. This year looks to be a great one! This past summer we helped organize a Microsoft SQL class which turned out to be a great success. Because of the response to this class, look for information on other similar classes.

If you are interested in Technology, IUX, or just want to become more involved in AIMS check out the member section of this site where you can chat with other AIMS members who are online, as well as get a list of groups AIMS has put together. This website is constantly under development so check back often for improvements. Also if you have ideas on how to improve this site don’t hesitate to Email the Webmaster! If you have any questions please, feel free to ask.
