April Social: Rock-climbing

Posted by hinduyuva on Apr 08 2009 | HY Socials

Namaste,

Last month as some of you know we attended a breakdancing class through HY Socials. Unfortunately we don’t have any pics to show because most of us were breaking on the floor trying to work out the moves :) A lot of fun for sure! We had a mini battle going on too, even though many of us were attending it for the first time!

A quick reminder: If you haven’t filled out the HY Socials Survey please do so by clicking below.

OK, this month we are having another exciting social event. Rock-climbing! Yup, thats right. Check out this clip of bouldering by Chris Sharma – one of the most famous names in the world of climbing.

Now just to make things clear we are not attempting anything close to that. We will be having more like a beginner’s orientation in rock-climbing by instructors. So no sweat. Of course those of you who are more experienced are also welcome

  • What: Rock-climbing beginner orientation
  • When: 25th April, Saturday 3 – 5 pm
  • Where: Stonegardens. 2839 NW Market St., Seattle WA 98107. www.stonegardens.com

I hope you will be able to join us for another exciting HY social event. Also, because we do group reservations we get discount rates, so thats another reason to come. FYI, because of strict supervision requirements we have limited capacity this time. So please respond at the earliest(mail to [hyuva] at [u.washington.edu]) to hold your spot.

Feb 2009: Temple Trip on Mahashivratri

Posted by hinduyuva on Feb 05 2009 | HY Socials

It has been our policy to have a community service event every quarter. Last year we organised a Food Packaging drive. This month we have decided to arrange a temple trip to the nearby temple in Bothell. The occasion this month happens to be Mahashivratri, a festival celebrated throughout Bharat with much fervour. You are welcome to participate as volunteer or as a devotee.

Jan 2009: Ice Skating Pics!

Posted by hinduyuva on Feb 05 2009 | HY Socials, Past Events, Photos

As planned we decided to have our social event at the Highland Ice Skating Arena. Ice skating was chosen because everyone wanted to do something new and adventurous. Most of us had no prior experience with ice skating so they were a bit anxious.

Getting into the skates can take some getting used to, as we realised. They need to be real tight to protect your ankles and get a good grip on the ice! (if that makes sense). We had arranged to take a group lesson from an instructor. She was friendly and warm and tried to help us out. But it took us a while to getting used to standing on ice on blades. We learnt a few basic moves like the scooter, the glide and the twizzles. Of course falling is a part of the game. But that only adds to the fun. Who dares wins!

While we were struggling on our feet little kids were zipping by us. Boy those kids sure learn fast. But for our first session we did good, I think so. Reminded us of our inner child and the energy within us waiting to sprout. It was a challenge for our bodies, which are normally used to typing at a keyboard and we had great fun exploring our own abilities. This is exactly what the event aimed for, a bit of an adrenaline rush and a learning experience instead of the usual stuff-yourself-like-a-thanksgiving-turkey at any Indian restaurant routine. We look forward to organising more such events and expect more people to join us.

Whats next ? Hmm… Watch out for the next announcement.

Introducing HY Socials: Ice Skating!

Posted by hinduyuva on Jan 07 2009 | HY Socials

Introducing Hindu Yuva Socials!

We hope everybody has had a nice start for the new year. For some time now we have been toying with the idea of having social events in a more informal setting. Restaurants and bars came to mind but in a bid to be more exciting and different we have decided on having events which are exciting and educational. A learning experience with an adventurous twist. Something that appeals to the youth. So without further ado…

What ? Ice skating

Where ? Highland Ice Arena, 18005 Aurora Ave. N, Shoreline WA (www.highlandice.com)
When ? Jan 24, 2009 Saturday at 1:30 pm
How much ? $14/person

This session will include a 45-60 min lesson for beginners too. Don’t forget to wear your gloves/mittens. Wear something comfortable. The lesson starts at 2 pm so make sure you arrive there atleast 15 min earlier.

If you haven’t tried ice-skating before you are highly encouraged to attend the class. The group discounts we get assure that you get a great deal for your money. This includes the ticket and rental costs too. So make sure to mark your calendars. Let us know if you need or can provide car pools.
