Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) announces an offering (”yajna”) of one million Sun Salutations, known as Surya Namaskar, to create awareness among the people about Yoga and its advantages in achieving a healthy body, mind and spirit. This will be the third Surya Namaskar Yajna (SNY) since it was first launched in 2007.

Surya Namaskar is a combination of yoga postures, called “āsanā(s)”, performed in a pre-determined sequence. They are a set of well-balanced movements that will stretch and exercise all the muscles in the body, thus keeping the body and mind healthy. It is practiced all over the world in more than forty different ways. A common practice of performing Surya Namaskar in a set of ten yoga postures provides good exercise to the whole body, calms the mind, and sharpens the intellect.

Each year Hindus worldwide celebrate January 14th as Makar Sankranti – a day that marks a change of season as the sun enters the sign of Capricorn or Makar. Makar Sankranti ushers in longer days; thus the festivity symbolizes sunshine in life. Therefore, to mark this occasion, HSS will conduct a collective Surya Namaskar Yajna (SNY) from January 17th to February 1st, 2009. HSS invites everyone in the United States to participate in this “Yoga for health; Health for humanity” event and perform Surya Namaskar with a collective goal of one million Surya Namaskar in the sixteen-day span. Last year, over 5,700 people from thirty states participated in this unique marathon, and this year we hope that over 10,000 participants across the country will reap rich benefits from Surya Namaskar.

To get us initiated, basics of Surya Namaskar will be taught in the weekly shakha on 18th January. We’ll continue doing the Namaskars at our homes daily till February 1 and will end the yajna with a two hour long marathon session. Join us to get started on a path to healthy living and help us meet the national goal of one million Surya Namaskars!

What? Surya Namaskar Basics Lesson
Where? HUB 200A
When? January 18th, 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Note: Half hour Surya Namaskar Session will be followed by regular shakha activities.

For more details, go to http://www.hssus.org/sny/

Introducing HY Classifieds! The Indian community on campus is very active. We keep getting requests from students about helping them publicize some of the events they are organizing or involved in, about finding them a room mate, selling furniture, buying a car… And we really couldn’t decide till now if our website is the right place to publicize those events.

So we decided to come up with this page, HY Classifieds – where students can publicize their events, find roomates. Think of it as a small billboard for posts relevant to students interested in Indians or Indian culture.

Well, so go ahead and send us your name, email and publicity material at hyuva at u dot washington dot edu.

We are proud to announce that Shikta Sapkota, a student of Political Science department at UW has decided to volunteer for the ‘Yuva for Sewa’ (Youth for Service) project through HinduYUVA. Indeed it is a matter of great pride for us as she is the second person from HY(Shobhit Mathur being the first one who volunteered to serve in the Caribbean) to do so. And she happens to be the first woman to do so too.

Last Saturday we gave her a small farewell party at an ice-cream shop and asked her about her motivation and plans.

HY: So Shikta what motivated you to volunteer for ‘Yuva for Sewa’ ?

Shikta: My motivation to be a volunteer is that I want to reach out to the neglected elements of our society and help them feel like they are one among us. I want to involve the children in different activities that will instill positive characteristics in them. By doing so, not only do I hope to uplift the mindset of these kids, I also hope to learn the meaning of life from them.

HY: Where exactly are you volunteering ?

Shikta: I am volunteering at a rehabilitation center for street children in Bangalore through Yuva for Sewa.

HY: Is this your first time in India ?

Shikta: Yes

HY: Hope you like Sun and spicy food.

Shikta: Yes, I do.

HY: So, do you have your shopping list ready ?

Shikta: (Laughs… ) I have to first spend time on working with the street children but if get some free time I might buy some clothes.

We hung out a bit more with Shikta and bid her a last farewell. She is already in Bangalore now. We will definitely quiz her again about her experiences when she comes back. Best wishes to Shikta till then.

If you would like to volunteer through the Youth for Service project please let us know. For more info, goto http://www.sewausa.org/yuva-for-sewa .
