    Shakha with Bhutanese Friends

Posted by admin on Jun 01 2009 | Past Events

Instead of holding the shakha at the usual venue, we held shakha on 30th May in Everett with Bhutanese refugees. Around 50 people joined us, and after a fun-filled extended khel session, they desribed their history and the problems being faced by them presently. Information about the same can be found here as well. The benefits being provided by the US government would end soon, after which they would be on their own. Even though they have work permit,  they have trouble finding jobs although many of them  have college degrees. Adjusting suddenly to an alien culture adds to their problems, especially for elders. We are looking to take some initiatives which would help them get settled here and make a new start. We, as students, may not be able to help them financially, but there are many other avenues to help, like helping in resume making, teaching them English, helping them get driver license, etc..  Let us know if you have more ideas and want to join in.

Shakha was followed by lunch where we got an opportunity to interact informally with a lot of people. The interaction led to a soccer match where they drubbed us 3-1 :)

Posted by admin on May 30 2009 | Uncategorized

Hindu YUVA is organizing a lecture seminar titled, “Religious Pluralism in the USA: The Case study of Hinduism” on June 6 in HUB 209A from 2 to 6PM. The Seminar is aimed at understanding the development of Hindu American identity and the challenges faced by the Hindu American community. A group of eminent speakers will present their studies on the challenges and opportunities faced by the Hindu community in the West esp. in the United States.

A brief bio of the speakers:

Linda Johnsen: (born 1954 in Chicago) is an author on yoga and other aspects of Hinduism. She earned a Masters degree in Eastern Studies and did post-graduate work in Comparative Religions at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. In addition she spent decades studying Eastern traditions with Shakta and Shaivite yogis in India and North America. Johnsen’s essays have appeared in numerous magazines including Yoga International, Yoga Journal, and Yoga Plus, as well as in many anthologies. She has written many books along with the bestseller, “A Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hinduism.”

Jeffery Armstrong: Jeffrey’s first degree was in Psychology followed by one in Literature. He studied the occult and Metaphysical philosophers of all world cultures until the age of 23 when he met his first Guru from India, His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Phabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. He is a master of Sanskrit, Ayurveda and Astrology and a mystical poet. As a charismatic guest speaker, Master of Ceremonies or speaking on his award-winning book, he is a sought after guest on TV and talk radio. For 15 years, he was a corporate executive in Silicon Valley, and a speaker for Fortune 500 companies. He is the founder director of Vedic Academy of Sciences and Arts, Vancouver, Canada.

    Sankrant Sanu:
