Shakha with Bhutanese Friends
Instead of holding the shakha at the usual venue, we held shakha on 30th May in Everett with Bhutanese refugees. Around 50 people joined us, and after a fun-filled extended khel session, they desribed their history and the problems being faced by them presently. Information about the same can be found here as well. The benefits being provided by the US government would end soon, after which they would be on their own. Even though they have work permit, they have trouble finding jobs although many of them have college degrees. Adjusting suddenly to an alien culture adds to their problems, especially for elders. We are looking to take some initiatives which would help them get settled here and make a new start. We, as students, may not be able to help them financially, but there are many other avenues to help, like helping in resume making, teaching them English, helping them get driver license, etc.. Let us know if you have more ideas and want to join in.
Shakha was followed by lunch where we got an opportunity to interact informally with a lot of people. The interaction led to a soccer match where they drubbed us 3-1
