About me

Hyunggu Jung is a PhD candidate of Biomedical and Health Informatics, under the supervision of Drs. Peter Tarczy-Hornoch and Mark Zachry, at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He received his B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Business Economics from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2008, and his M.Math. degree from the University of Waterloo in 2010, under the supervision of Prof. Robin Cohen, and his M.S. degree with a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) specialization from Stanford University in 2012. He is a recipient of the Korean Government Scholarship and Mogam Science Scholarship.

Research

He has designed, developed, and evaluated methods and applications to support users in multiple domains: health, social media, sharing economy, and education. His recent research has focused on the following three areas:

  • Data-driven Design: supporting multiple stakeholders with special needs by creating tools through data-driven approaches

    • Smartphone app leveraging food images to support older adults with diabetes (Doctoral research)

    • Social network analysis of visually impaired people on video-based social media platforms

    • Data-driven personas for creating mHealth technology to support North Korean defectors with depression

    • Matching algorithm for service transaction using a text classification algorithm for facilitating peer-to-peer exchanges in sharing economy with Dr. Victoria Bellotti (PARC)

  • Data-driven Decision Making: improving decision-making process through the development of theoretical/technical models leveraging Big Data

    • Predictive model of head and neck tumor metastasis from sparse data sources using formal anatomic knowledge representations with Prof. Mark Whipple (BHI)

    • Automated reasoning architecture, GuideLine INteraction Detection Architecture (GLINDA), that generates recommendations from multiple clinical guidelines with Prof. Mark Musen (Stanford BMIR)

    • Framework for reasoning about benefits and costs of interaction with users in real-time decision making environments with Prof. Robin Cohen (Waterloo AI Group)

  • Data Visualization: analyzing data from multiple resources through data visualization

    • Visualization of multi-dimensional user data in Wikipedia for facilitating potential collaborations of advanced editors with Prof. Mark Zachry (HCDE)

    • Visualization of anomalies in multi-clinic electronic health records (EHR) data with Prof. Kari Stephens (ITHS)

    • Visualization of patient demographics from multiple facilities across time for cohort discovery (i.e., FindIT 1.0, FindIT 2.0) with Prof. Kari Stephens (ITHS)

    • Visualization of behavior data of audiences while attending presentations with Dr. Shamsi Iqbal (MSR)
