Like never before in history, the 2000 United States Census has focused the nation's attention on the country's Hispanic population. But the astounding growth and great potential of U.S. Latinos is only part of the story. Lurking beneath the surface is a significant and unacceptable gap in educational attainment. That makes this a very important moment for Hispanics in the United States and for the advocates and educators whose cause is to advance the educational opportunity for all. While the world watches, we must grab hold of the great challenge before us. Because the economic and social benefits of closing this gap (or the costs of not doing so) are every bit as astounding as the Latino growth rate. Five years ago, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund set an incredibly ambitious goal: to double the rate at which Hispanics complete their college degree from 9 to 18%. Doing so, we reasoned, would require exponential progress in our efforts to raise funds for college scholarships. The kinds of dollars that corporations and foundations don't commit to without accountability. So, HSF set about the task of looking critically and analytically at ourselves and benchmarking our performance outcomes on a variety of levels. —From the 2000 Hispanic Scholarship Fund Hispanic Education Study. |
