Healthcare Alternative Spring Break

HCASB 2008 Frequently Asked Questions

Where will I stay?

To keep costs down for participants, we do not stay at hotels or motels. Most teams will stay at a local church or there may be someone at the clinic who will volunteer their home for your team.

How do I get there?

Each team will use a rental vehicle obtained through HCASB's partnership with Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The team will decide as a group on driving responsibilites.

How much does it cost to participate?

There is a program fee for each participant, which will cover food, housing, and transportation for the entire week. The T-shirt and other administrative costs (such as participant training packets) will also be covered by the program fee, which is estimated to be around $300. The exact amount will be finalized once we arrange for all of our sites and participants. Program fees are due one week after applicants are notified of their acceptance the program in February. A limited number of partial scholarships will be available. Further information will be posted at a later date.

What do I eat during the program?

Part of your program fee will go towards supplementing a food budget for your team. As a team, you will decide on what you will eat during the week, and one or more members of your team will shop for all of your team's food prior to departure. A good way to save money is to bring your own utensils (any unused money from your alloted food budget will go directly back to you!).

Will I be trained prior to departure?

Yes. There will be a mandatory training session in early March for all participants. During this meeting, participants will meet their fellow team members and receive specific information about their respective clinics and sites. Participants will also learn about their scheduled one-day community service activity.

Are shadowing opportunities available for pre-dental and pre-nursing students?

Yes. A number of Spring Break spots are available for pre-dental and pre-nursing students to shadow dentists and nurses. From our experience, dentists and nurses are in high demand and depended upon in rural and underserved areas. We believe that HCASB will be a great way for you to further explore these options!
