The Greyhat Group
is a University of Washington student organization at the Tacoma Campus whose mission is to
research all aspects of computer security, including network security and information assurance,
and to share that information with the regional community. The group is organized by Information
Technology and Systems (ITS) students, but is open to all UW students who have an interest in
computer security.

The Greyhat Group is where to start.
Members meet weekly and discuss a wide range of security issues. We identify the software and techniques used by the bad guys to compromise computer systems, then we try them for ourselves - hands on - using the campus IA lab or our own computers.
Members are also provided with download links so they can download and practice with the same network penetration testing software used by industry professionals and bad guys alike.
We also show members how to create their own portable network security lab so that they can practice network penetration and defense anywhere, any time they have a few spare minutes. We also provide member-created tutorials and exercises to help guide members in their exploration of security topics.
At this event students from all over the western United States get to put their skills to the test in an attack and defend scenerio alongside industry, military, government, and academic professionals.
Teams of nine students from each school try to administer a small business network while under attack from the Red Team. Typical tasks include administering user accounts, setting and enforcing password policies, setting up mail servers and ftp servers, and intrusion detection systems. It is also often necessary to edit web page code to prevent SQL injection and secure a database server.
Pressure is applied by "Management" who want features added, and by the attackers who try to steal data, lock the administrators out of the router, switch, or computers, delete data, or deface the web page.
NWSEC is a 2-day event hosted once a year by the members of the Greyhat Group where experts from government agencies, military, academia, and industry are invited to speak and share their knowledge and experience of current issues related to computer and network security.
