I have updated my cv: you can now download it as a .pdf. I have just earned my Ph.D. in Communication at the University of Washington in Seattle. As a graduate student, I worked as an Instructor and a Teaching/Research Assistant in the Comparative History of Ideas program. I am about to start working as an assistant professor of communication and media studies at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. I have published my scholarship in academic journals such as Language and Intercultural Communication, Journal of Visual Literacy, Visual Communication and Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change. I have also published part of my doctoral research in an edited book and am in the course of publishing two additional co-authored book chapters. Click here to see a complete list of my publications.
I co-direct the research and teaching project Urban Archives, which was featured in the Seattle Times' Pacific Northwest Magazine. Urban Archives has appeared in a variety of local media, including the Microsoft webcast on10.net. Here is the video of me and Irina talking about the Urban Archives in their TV studio.
In the past few years, I have been awarded two dissertation fellowships, by the University of Washington Graduate School and the Simpson Center for the Humanities, for my doctoral project "Visions of Europe: The Semiotic Production of Transnational Identity in Contemporary European Visual Discourse".
I have also served as a volunteer mentor to a teen photography student for Youth in Focus, a Seattle-based non-profit organization. In 2006, I was invited to speak about my research at the National Centre for Research on Europe at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In winter 2006 I taught a course titled Photography: Theoretical Reflections and Ethnographic Applications. Four of my students from winter quarter won the UW Library Research Award for their wonderful group project Aurora Avenue: Highway Culture in Transition. I am so proud!
