First Meeting of Autumn 06
The October consisted of planning the rest of the year and brainstorming interesting meetings.
Here's a sneak peak at what we have planned:
- November Making Widgets
This year we plan to have several meetings devoted to programming on the mac. The first of these will be next month, and will be a BYOL (Bring your own laptop) session designed as an introduction to making widgets. During the session we will design a simple widget for Dashboard. Widgets are written using HTML and javascript, so you might want to brush up on these before coming.
- Cocoa Development
Several meetings this year will be designed as an introduction to Cocoa programming. This could be a lot of material to cover, but there's a lot of cool things you can do easily using just Interface builder and a little bit of objective-c. We may look a bit at a cool gaming library for cocoa if anyone is interested in that type of work as well.
- Favorite Software
What are your favorite programs and time savors? What secret OS features have you discovered that now you can't live without? No matter how many you have, there's always some other program you would love if only you knew about it. Come share your favs and pick up some ideas.
- Unix Talk
We all know that there's a lot of features a power user can access through the Terminal. Without overflowing your brain with a full lecture on unix, this session will teach you how to improve your efficiency by using the Terminal.
- Gaming Session
Who needs all this programming stuff anyways? We know what we really care about - the Games. We know you already have the full Blizzard lineup, but where besides the Flying Toasters can you play Load runner or Oregon Trail again?
- Apple Programming Competition
FTMUG is working with ACM and Apple to host a Programming Competition this year at UW. Similar to Microsoft and Google's programming competitions, it will allow Cocoa developers a place to show off their skills to fellow coders and recruiters. Details forthcoming.
Oktoberfest
Our first meeting to kick of the new year will be October 17th at 7:00 in HUB 304F. Be there or be... not there.
