Here are the dates of our upcoming meetings and the topics to be discussed.

Upcoming Meetings

January 30 - Book Club - 5:30 PM

  • Our next meeting will take place in the Petersen Room (4th floor, Allen Library North).
  • We'll be reading Jameson's "Postmodernsism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism, available here. The images for the text can be viewed here. There are blue links to the images throughout the text.

Past Meetings

November 29 - Book Club - 5:30 PM at the Simpson Center

  • Our next meeting will be at the Simpson Center, in CMU 204, Nov. 29, from 5.30-8.30. The reading will be from de Certeau's "Practices of Everyday Life". Here is the Cover Page and Notes, the Introduction, and Chapter VII. The readings in French can be found here.

November 1 - Book Club - 6:00 PM at Will's house

October 12-13 - Aesthetics and (Self) Deception graduate conference.

May 16 (Wednesday) - Book Club - 6:00 PM at Otilia's house

  • Please join us for another meeting on Wednesday, May 16th, at Otilia's house, to read Bataille's "La structure pshychologique du fascisme." The text will be available online soon, thanks to Insook and Alex. For those who cannot read French, please look for an English translation at the library.

April 26 - Book Club - 6:00 PM at Otilia's house

April 19 -

  • We'll resume our normal meeting schedule. Today, we'll discuss our current projects and perhaps talk about inviting the Dean to come to our meeting.

April 12 - Book Club - 6:00 PM at Otilia's house

  • We will be reading first chapter from E. Auerbach's Mimesis, "Odysseus' Scar." The PDF can be found here

April 6 @ 1:30 in B-202:

  • New professor Geoffrey Turnovsky will be present to talk about his strategies for writing and researching a doctoral dissertation.

March 1:

  • The Chair Search Committe will ask our input to aid them in hiring a new chair for FIS.

February 15: Book Club (January Book Club cancelled)

  • The Book Club will meet at 6pm at Otilia's house. We will discuss the following:
    • Calinescu, Matei: Five Faces of Modernity: Modernism, Avant-Garde, Decadence, Kitsch, Postmodernism, Duke University Press, 1987

February 1: FGSA

  • John Keeler will talk to us about the procedures for choosing a new department chair. There will also be a q & a session, so bring any questions you might have for him. Pizza will be provided.

January 18: FGSA

  • Our colleague Anne Miller will speak and entertain questions about her experience at this year's MLA conference.

January 4: FGSA

  • MA/PhD Exams

November 30 :

  • The Bookclub will meet at 5:30 at the Colleg Inn for a drink and to discuss three articles that make a summary of some useful critical terms: "Representation", "Discourse" and "Narration". The master copy is already in James' office, so those interested in joining us can photocopy them as soon as possible.
  • We also decided that we will read "Five Faces of Modernity" by Matei Calinescu and we will discuss it right after our winter break.

To discuss at the FGSA meeting: (ATTN - meeting will be at 12:00 instead of 12:30)

  • Peer review for abstracts, papers, etc.
  • Discussion of proposals for Evelyne.
