FIUTS Student Board

FIUTS is an independent 501c-3 non-profit organization founded on the University of Washington campus in 1948. Our mission is to inspire lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding and peace. To read more about FIUTS programs, visit the website at www.fiuts.org. FIUTS Student Board members serve a unique and important role within FIUTS, including the following:

  - Lead by example in advocating for FIUTS values of peace, celebration of diversity, dialogue, engagement, community service

  - Represent the voice of the FIUTS community and promote FIUTS to the UW campus and to Greater Seattle

  - Plan and carry out Cultural Fest and Global Gala

  - Lead several other FIUTS events throughout the year (including during New International Student Orientation)

  - Serve as part of the FIUTS Board of Trustees

  - Be stewards of the organization: Assure its ongoing viability, vitality, and fiscal strength. Be custodians of the organization’s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan. Adhere to the FIUTS Code of Ethics. Serve the best interests of FIUTS, fairly and impartially.

While Student Board members have significant responsibilities, serving on the board also offers significant benefits. Your opportunities will include the following:
personal development - improving your organizational, leadership, event planning, and communication skills; attending quarterly workshops/retreats; working closely
with FIUTS full time staff; serving on a non-profit Board of Trustees, which is an incredible experience and resume builder; and participating in a board mentorship program.  

The Student Board is usually composed of 8-14 members. The application deadline is April 8th and interviews will be conducted from April 13th-22nd. Student
Board members will be elected and notified by May 1st.
NOTE: If elected to the Student Board you will be required to:
              1) Come to Global Gala on Saturday, May 16th and attend a transition meeting on Thursday, May 21st.
              2) Attend a mandatory full day retreat/workshop on Tuesday, September 29th.
              3) Attend weekly meetings throughout the year.

Each Student Board (SB) member holds an officer position with a set of unique responsibilities. 

1. President – Leads SB meetings, works closely with FIUTS staff advisor (weekly or bi-weekly meetings) and SAO advisor, coordinates team building/bonding events, is the face of the Student Board, ensures committees are communicating and doing their work, oversees next year’s Student Board Application process.  The President is the only position that is elected by the other Student Board members.

2. Secretary – Keeps records and documents: updating Cultural Fest and Global Gala Planners, ensures minutes get taken – not necessarily taking the minutes but creating a calendar for taking minutes.

3. Treasurer – Creates budgets, spearheads fundraising, works with FIUTS staff members in charge of fundraising and sponsorship.

4. Website Manager – Manages the SB web page, possibly helps with selected projects for the main FIUTS webpage (like doing student profiles, video interviews, etc.)

5. Global Gala Chairs (2 people) - Serve as the overall coordinators for the event, be the point people for questions, oversee Global Gala committee.

6. Cultural Fest Chairs (2 people) - Serve as the overall coordinators for the event, be the point people for questions, oversee Cultural Fest committee  

7. Wednesday Lunch Chair – Works with FIUTS staff and volunteers to carry out weekly Wednesday Lunches and create activities that promote interaction.  Must be available Wednesdays from 11am – 2pm (flexible).

8. Tabling/Outreach Chair – Coordinates tabling events on campus, gives introductory talks to classes or other campus groups, works with FIUTS staff on other outreach activities.

9. Art/graphics Chair – Creates poster/flyer designs, does other miscellaneous creative projects.

10. Orientation Chair – Works with FIUTS staff and facilitators to organize and lead student activities and ice-breakers during International Student Orientation at the beginning of each quarter.  Must be available during July/August 2009 to prepare for Fall Orientation.
