FIUTS is an independent 501c-3 non-profit organization founded on the University of Washington campus in 1948. Our mission is to connect university students with local and global communities through programs that build international awareness, cross-cultural communication, and informed leadership. FIUTS Student Board Role
The FIUTS Student Board is a year-long student leadership team composed of 8-14 members. The Student Board serves a unique and important role within FIUTS, including:
- Leading by example in advocating for FIUTS values of peace, celebration of diversity, dialogue, engagement, community service
- Representing the voice of the FIUTS community and promoting FIUTS to the UW campus and to greater Seattle
- Planning and carrying out two major events each year, Cultural Fest and Global Gala
- Working with FIUTS staff to lead other FIUTS events during the year (including International Student Orientation events and ongoing Events and Activities)
- Serving as part of the FIUTS Board of Trustees
- Being active stewards of the organization by: 1) Assuring its ongoing viability, vitality, and fiscal strength; 2) Acting as custodians of the organization’s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan; and 3) Adhering to the FIUTS Code of Ethics and serving the best interests of FIUTS, fairly and impartially.

- Personal development: improving your organizational, leadership, event planning, and communication skills
- Opportunity to learn about the nonprofit sector and serve on a non-profit Board of Trustees as a full voting member (an incredible experience and resume builder)
- Participating in a board mentorship program
- Quarterly workshops, retreats and training in marketing, fundraising, public speaking, event management, and strategic planning
- Working closely with FIUTS full time staff in carrying out FIUTS programs and mission in our community
How to Apply
Key dates:
- 2012-2013 Student Board applications will open on March 1, 2012.
- The application deadline is April 1, 2012.
- Interviews will be conducted in April.
- Student Board members will be elected and notified by May 1st.
If elected to the Student Board you will be required to:
- Attend Global Gala (5/19/2012)
- Attend a spring 2012 retreat (probably in late May) which includes transition meetings and trainings
- Attend a half-day retreat on September 25, 2012
- Attend a full-day retreat in winter, 2013
- Attend short training workshops throughout your year of service (Fall 2012-Spring 2013)
- Attend weekly one-hour meetings throughout the year of service
- Participate as a FIUTS Facilitator at least once per quarter
- Serve as Student Board Officer (see below)

Student Board Officer Positions
Each Student Board (SB) member holds an officer position with a set of unique responsibilities. *These positions may change each year in response to Student Board priorities.
- President* - Facilitates SB meetings, works closely with FIUTS staff advisor (weekly or bi-weekly meetings) and SAO advisor, coordinates team building/bonding events, is the face of the Student Board at campus and community events, ensures committees are communicating and doing their work, oversees the Student Board Application process. The President is the only position that is elected by the other Student Board members.
- Secretary - Understands the SB constitution fully and ensures that all business is conducted within its guidlines. Maintains records and documents, updates CulturalFest and Global Gala Planners, ensures minutes get taken – not necessarily taking the minutes but creating a calendar for taking minutes.
- Treasurer* - Creates budgets, spearheads fundraising activities, works with FIUTS staff on fundraising and sponsorship. Oversees and facilitates the use of the SB bank account.
- Website Manager - Manages the SB web page, may help with selected projects for the main FIUTS webpage (such as student profiles, video interviews, etc.)
- Global Gala Chairs* (2 positions) - Serve as the overall coordinators for the Global Gala, held each Spring, be the point people for questions, oversee Global Gala committee.
- Global Gala Marketing & Outreach Chair – Support the work of the Global Gala planning committee and oversee the graphic design, marketing, and publicity for the event.
- CulturalFest Chairs* (2 positions) - Serve as the chair of one of the two student planning committees and work with the FIUTS Board and Staff on the overall coordination for the largest annual FIUTS event.
- CulturalFest Marketing & Outreach Chair – Support the work of the CulturalFest planning committees and support all marketing and public relations for the event, especially campus promotion. Note: Some graphic design will be required for this position
- Wednesday Lunch Chair - Works with FIUTS staff and volunteers to carry out weekly Wednesday Lunches and create activities that promote interaction and support the marketing plan for upcoming events. Must be available Wednesday Lunch Days from around 11am – 2pm (flexible).
- International Student Orientation Chair – Work with FIUTS staff and volunteers to support International Student Orientation and to promote the FIUTS Student Board to new students before the start of Fall quarter. Note: Must be in Seattle by September 5, 2011
