Seattle Exchange - Atwater

Past Development

1905

The office was first established as "Queen Anne" with CB manual type equipment installed at 1608 4th Avenue W. at W. Garfield St. and 4th Avenue W.

1921

"Queen Anne" prefix changes to "Garfield" to eliminate use of "Q" (not on dial).

1923

A new building was erected at W. Garfield St. and 4th Avenue W., and the manual office replaced by panel type switching equipment.

1930

The second unit of panel was started, "Alder".

1952

Approximately 2000 M.S. were cut to the Main C.O. district as panel equipment was exhausted.

1957

A new building on the corner of W. Galer St. and 3rd Avenue W. about a block from the panel building, was erected.

1958

A #5XB office (AT 4) was established for growth — 2L-5N calling was inaugurated in the Atwater district. Approximately 2000 M.S. were cut from the Main district to Atwater reestablishing the former MA-AT district boundary.

1961

DDD/ANI (AT 2,3) LAMA (AT 4) established.

1965

Seattle Toll 5 was established at Atwater. A multi-antenna tower was placed on the Atwater 4 building and radio terminal equipment for interstitial TD-2 routes east to Denver and north to Vancouver B.C. was installed.
