servers) is not supported or endorsed in any way by the University of
Washington or UW Computing and Communications.
I've set up an IRC network for the UW community.

Kevin has
created a nickserv, called flaxserv. Apparently some people can't
survive the stress of knowing that nicknames aren't sacred. You can
register your nick if you have a UWNetID. If
you're interested in the code, he has it available on his page also.
Ian has made
available a CGI:IRC
gateway for this network.
Nikky has a stats page.
I will remain committed to being a benevolent dictator.
official channels
You can join the channel #uw for general discussion. You
can also join course-oriented channels. Examples:
- #cse143 — CSE 143, all sections.
- #cse143a — CSE 143, lecture section A.
- #cse143ad — CSE 143, quiz section AD.
persistent channels
These channels seem to stay around from day to day. Check one
out. To be listed here, contact me.
motd
This server is controlled by Duncan Smith and is
intended for use by the campus community.
It is not supported or endorsed in any way by
either the University of Washington or UW
Computing and Communications. If you have
questions or need assistance, you can contact the
server administrator: <email omitted>
More information:
http://students.washington.edu/f/irc
Illegal activity, such as the illegal sharing of
pirated software or music, is prohibited on this
network. Violators will be K-lined. (IRC isn't
that good at file-sharing anyway.)
According to Googlism:
irc is important
irc is a drug
irc is not like napster
irc is not a "game"
irc is about the hottest thing going on the
internet
uw is prime peace corps territory
uw is very different from a credit card company
uw is a willing accomplice in promoting students'
exaggerated misconceptions
uw is an internet service provider
uw is now broken
If you have some pretty ascii-art to put in the motd, I'd be
interested in hearing about it. No wider than 50 columns, please.
