Expenses in 2008

Total expenditures in 2008 were $39,471. Administrative costs, including chapter membership fees were $1,782. This raised the percentage of administrative costs to 3.5% of expenditures. Two factors account for this increase: (1) we now pay a flat fee to EWB-USA of $400 per year for chapter membership (in previous years chapters did not pay flat fees to EWB-USA), and (2) we rented a facility for our fundraiser in 2008 but had a facility donated in 2007. Total student airfare to Bolivia in 2008 was $12,495. Seven students participated in various project trips in 2008. Project costs in Bolivia for the two projects totaled $37,689. The projects consisted of a roof and stove project for 20 families and stabilization of seven miles of dirt road. A finer breakdown of materials and in-country transportation is not yet complete for 2008. The Suriname assessment trip cost $1,818. This included airfare for one student and ground transportation for the assessment team. The two professional mentors paid their own airfare.

In calendar year 2008, EWB-UW did one evaluation trip to Bolivia in February to assess the functionality of the stoves and roofs and to prepare for another implementation trip in summer 2008. We completed two implementation trips in summer 2008, one was a roof and stove project in Yanayo Chico and Cueva Pata and one was a road stabilization project for the region. We also funded a site assessment trip for a project to provide potable water to three communities in Suriname. This project remains in the assessment phase.

Note: Not all receipts for 2008 have been filed and reimbursed, it is not uncommon for expenses in one year to not be reimbursed until the following year, showing up as expenditures a year after they were actually incurred. A more detailed breakdown of the 2 Bolivia implementation trips is not yet available.
