what's that called when someone gets kidnapped and go through a terrible experience, but they become attached and they feel they're going to miss the person/place that caused them so much torture? i feel a little bit like that with philadelphia. after making it through the semester, it's rough having to leave. there are some good people here...but overall, i'm convinced, it's a crap town, and the program isn't worth my time/future life savings. i'd better get out of here before i really get attached...yuck

after days of ludicrous cold, it's finally snowing! our studio competition is over, and this afternoon we finally start real studio. the university of pennsylvania has an ice plant a few blocks away from where we live. in the summer (and perhaps other times), when electricity costs are super high in the day, they wait till night when the rates go down and they make ice in a huge building with the cheap electricity. then, during the day, they run water through the ice building and circulate it throughout the campus (they own around 150 largish buildings) instead of using air conditioners that would cost a lot to run. next week our class gets to tour the central control for the environment controls for the university. i should watch brazil again.

i went to my huge orientation for my program today for the incoming spring semester students. there are 8 students entering the program this semester (though they said we have "huge" overall class). of the 8 new students, (4) FOUR (1/2, 50%) are named ERIK. With a K. WTF. since amtrak has no intentions of adapting to fit into the 21st century, i couldn't find any sort of phone number to connect me to the station to find out if my 11 boxes of stuff had arrived. so after our 1 hour orientation, i took a stroll to the train station and found out it was there (they said they would call...but don't they all?). then i continued downtown and had a dandy walk. it's actually a nice town in the sun (it was raining the past 2 days). tomorrow i finally get my stuff. then our place will finally be sweet.
