Liz Perkin

I am a Masters Student at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington. My research focuses on riparian ecology. My advisor is Prof. Robert J Naiman.

I have been a masters student at the University of Washington since 2006. The topic of my masters project is The Relationship of Soil Nitrogen Availability to Riparian Tree Growth on the Queets River. Before coming to UW, I received a bachelors degree from Reed College.

My short-term goals: After earning my Ph.D., I plan to seek employment as a professor. I would prefer to teach at a small college or university where there is plenty of emphasis on professor-undergrad interaction. In the case I can't find the right position as a professor, I would like to work for a NGO or tribal group that focuses on watershed restoration and community involvement/education.

My long-term goals: My dream is to found a research and education center that would focus on finding ways to farm, ranch and extract timber resources in a sustainable way. Ideally, this would involve major research universities, local farmers, timber companies, local tribes and the local community to find creative ways to increase productivity while reducing negative environmental impacts, especially to rivers.

In my spare time, I am a long-distance runner and I compete in ride-and-tie, a sport that combines endurance riding and long-distance running.
