I'm a PhD student in Geography at the University of Washington. I received my MA in Geography from the University of Oregon in 2013 and my BA in History and Geography from Calvin College in 2011. My research is at the intersection of urban geography and technology studies. My work is funded by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and a Lilly Graduate Fellowship in Humanities & the Arts.

I am currently in my first year of PhD studies at the University of Washington. While my dissertation project is still an idea-in-progress, my research interests center on urban geography, civic technologies, and local governance.

My master's thesis, written in Geography at the University of Oregon, is titled "Touring Detroit: Ruins, Representation, and Redevelopment." It examines the paradoxical nature of "ruin tourism" in the city of Detroit. It is freely available via scholarsbank.uoregon.edu.

The majority of my teaching experience has been in 15-20 person discussion sections that supplement larger lecture courses in human and regional geography. Because of the nature of this kind of learning environment, activity-based exercises for partners or small groups are usually my pedagogical tools of choice. Below is a small collection of some of the assignments & exercises I've used over the past few years. Kudos to the fantastic educators I've worked with in developing these. Attribution is included in the linked docs.

A full list of the courses for which I have been a TA can be found in my CV.

World Regional Geography: Geoguessr assignment
Intro to Human Geography: Location, place, and space
Intro to Human Geography: Political geography and nation-building exercise
Writing in the social sciences: Sources and citations exercises
