Wheel Centers
The parts came from one large 12" x 12" x 5" block of aluminum we had on hand. I sawed this into plates, squared it up, and machined the lug pattern and pockets into the plates. Then, I cut the square plates into rounds on the band saw. Then, I turned the front and back profiles on the lathe, using a fixture plate I made. Finally, I milled the spoke pockets, outer profile, and outer holes on the 3-axis CNC mill.

Steering Rack
Center Section of the Steering Rack Housing. 3-axis surfacing was done to produce a very lightweight, complex part in a short amount of time with the fewest number of setups in the machine.
|
I designed and machined all these parts in one week, except for the pinion gear and rack bar, which were purchased.

For my final project in ME 409 CNC, I wanted to play around with 3D surface milling. So, I came up with a fun project, a twisted block.
