Senate Reports

Previous February 4, 2008 Next

Greetings, League!

I am finally back in the swing of things after schedule shenanigans, so after a few lapses, here is another Senate report.

After the passing of the Legislative Agenda at the close of fall quarter, Senate has of late devoted itself to new student-sponsored resolutions. A number of these are in progress or passed, and I encourage you all to take a look at the legislation for the current session to learn about recent legislation that you might be interested in. A number of these recent resolutions commend notable campus figures, so a quick read will inform you about some of the UW’s exemplary figures, events, and organizations. There has also been an increased emphasis on drafting new legislation, with brainstorming sessions held semi-frequently. This is an excellent time to bring me issues that you want to see debated and acted upon in the public eye. I have already put forth the idea of examining campus pest control policies, with an eye towards banishing from our pristine lawns the dread and oft-defecating goose. Other highlights include spending a number of weeks in committee forging and reforging a resolution calling for a representation of Bruce Lee on campus, as well as a rousing grammar breakdown by Yutaka Jono explaining the lexical ambiguity in the phrase “racism unchecked makes people of color unsafe” (that one earned him a round of applause for boldly striding up to the projector and putting on a grand show of objects, subjects, and prepositions).

As always, I can be reached during my office hour (now changed for the quarter to 11:30 to 12:30 on Mondays in HUB S-31) or at snowg@u.washington.edu. Inform me of your opinions on legislation and issues I can bring to the Senate’s attention. Also, we still need signatures for our petition to renew our Senate seat. I believe the deadline for getting this petition in was a few weeks ago, so we continue to have a Senate seat as long as the Senate Membership Coordinator fails to notice we don’t have it in. Please drop by!

Thanks once again for reading.

Your Senator, Gareth Snow
