Senate Reports

Previous November 6, 2007 Next

Greetings, League!

Here is my biweekly report for the Senate meetings of October 30th and November 6th (biweekly because there is still no means in sight to distribute them).

The business of the 30th consisted primarily of electing liaisons to various committees, as well as debating and voting on R-14-3, A Resolution in Support of the DREAM Act (It passed, with my vote for it). I was elected vice-chair of the Campus Affairs committee, my only power and responsibility in which role being to substitute for the committee chair in Steering Committee meetings when she can’t attend. (Steering is the committee that arranges the agenda, directs legislation, and assigns members to committees for Senate).

On the 6th, we heard presentations on the plans for HUB renovation, something which may be of some interest to League members, and on Senate finances and budget, which may be of no interest to League members (feel free to prove me wrong though). We also heard first readings of R-14-6, A Resolution Commending the University of Washington Men’s Crew Team, and R-14-7, A Resolution in Recognition of Professor Yoky Matsuoka. Amusingly enough, the version of R-14-6 shown to the Senate floor (which included errors we corrected in the Campus Affairs committee. Grr) mistakenly listed the title as “A Resolution Commending the University of Washington Men,” which would hypothetically contain both more generality and misogyny than the actual legislation. R-14-6 recognizes the men’s crew team for winning the 2007 Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship and Ten Eyck trophy this year. R-14-7 recognizes the work of Professor Yoky Matsuoka, who recently received a MacArthur Fellowship (a quite prestigious award and stipend). Both of these pieces of legislation will be in second readings (and up for vote) next week.

As always, I can be reached during my office hour (12:00 — 1:00 on Wednesdays in HUB S-31) or at snowg@u.washington.edu. Inform me of your opinions on legislation and issues I can bring to the Senate’s attention. Also, we still need signatures for our petition to renew our Senate seat.

Your Senator,
Gareth Snow
