Greetings, League!
This last Senate meeting was both productive and amusing, the latter mostly on account of the Valentine’s Day date auction held between items of business in the Senate agenda. Alex Lark served admirably as the auctioneer for a variety of services offered by the men and women of Senate, and proceeds went to the Pink Blanket Fund to defray medical costs for the victim of an attack earlier this year. The salient feature of this aspect of the session was likely the final auction, where Alex Lark himself was on the block, and our vice chair had to take over the duty of hawking his callipygian assets.
On the business side of affairs, the Senate passed legislation recognizing the accomplishments of Jeffrey Eaton, recipient of the Marshall Scholarship (and who happens to be the T.A. for my math class at the moment). If any of you know Jeff, congratulate him on his prestigious accomplishments.
In committee, we continued to work on drafting potential legislation to increase voter registration among students. Anyone with interest or suggestions in this area should let me know so they can contribute during this resolution’s early development.
There was also legislation brought before the Senate on the Northern Illinois University tragedy. This was passed with alacrity in the same session; the text of the resolution may be found online at the Senate web site (senate.asuw.org).
Provost Phyllis Wise was in attendance for what promises to be the first of a sequence of public forums with University administrative officials. This is an excellent opportunity for those who have questions and concerns involving the University administration to make themselves heard.
As always, I can be reached during my office hour (11:30 to 12:30 on Mondays in HUB S-31) or at snowg@u.washington.edu. Inform me of your opinions on legislation and issues I can bring to the Senate’s attention. Also, we still need signatures for our petition to renew our Senate seat.
Best Wishes to All, Gareth Snow
