Yeah this was probably better than going up the south side...though camping down at Ingalls creek is pretty great.

He did suggest hiking out Ingalls Creek too.

Special: Club Campout • Dragontail Peak via Aasgard Pass - May 26th

4 hours 48 min ago
We'll be adding my lab members: Jenny (with Olivia as a 27 lb. training weight!), Fredrick, Shelley, David and Katya to the trip. They are just a few ass-kickings away from being ready for a Rainier attempt!

Olivia and her sherpa, Jenny, will be going to the lake only.

Idle Talk • Glacier field assistant wanted for N Cascades research

6 hours 14 min ago
I just saw this posting on NWHikers.net for a glacier field assistant from Aug 1- 17. I know Dr. Pelto peripherally through some similar previous glacier activities of mine. This would make a great experience for an undergrad interested in earth science/glaciers if you are free before fall classes start. I think it would be cool if a UW student nabbed this fantastic opportunity!

Here's the link to the original ad:
http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7998287

And a copy of the text posting:

Glacier Field Assistant August 1-August 17, 2012
NORTH CASCADE GLACIER CLIMATE PROJECT 1984-2012
Dr. Mauri S. Pelto: Director
Nichols College, Dudley, MA 01571: 508-835-2727:
mspelto@nichols.edu
www.nichols.edu/departments/glacier/

Field Assistant Position: NCGCP hires college students and citizen scientists each summer for the two-three week field season. This has included 3 citizen scientists, 4 students from CWU, 2 from EWU, 9 from WWU, 5 from UW, 5 from OSU and 6 from community colleges in Washington in recent years. This summer I am looking for an assistant to accompany us in the field and provide transportation for themselves and three other glacier workers for the field season. A stipend of $350 will be provided and all gas and food will be covered. Think of it as a paid vacation in the mountains with a guide.

Who we are? NCGCP was founded in 1983 to identify the response of North Cascade glaciers to regional climate change, particularly changes in mass balance, glacier runoff and terminus behavior. NCGCP is a field project that has a broader interdisciplinary scope and examines more glaciers than any other program in North America. It does so cost effectively relying on no permanent camps, helicopter support or salaries for the director or returning field scientists The three-four week field season includes no days off and each day is spent completing measurements on glaciers. The focus is on glacier mapping, mass balance measurement, terminus observations and glacier runoff monitoring.

Why study glaciers in the North Cascades of Washington? Glaciers are one of the world’s best climate monitors and are a critical water resource to many populated glaciated regions. This is particularly true in the North Cascades where 725 glaciers yield 200 billion gallons of runoff each summer and where the glaciers have lost 30 % of their area in the last century.

I can't come to the camp out unfortunately, but I think a great hike that would fit what you might be look for Sarah (and others) would be Bootjack Mountain. Its 6.7 miles and 4,000' with great views over toward the Stuart Range. You would probably want snowshoes though, as it is a north facing slope and would have a fair amount of snow. Here is a recent trip report for that trail: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7998316

Have fun!

Know-how • Two person sleep systems to reduce weight

9 hours 36 min ago
I know some of you, especially the married folks on the board, have experience with 1 sleeping bag per two person systems. Our current thought is to zip my mummy bag to a Feathered Friends Sandpiper groundsheet, but before we buy anything, we want to hear what has worked for you and what hasn't. We're primarily looking for a system that works well for the Cascades- we're probably not heading up Denali or other expedition-size peaks any time soon.

I'm interested in hearing about wide sleeping bags, zip-on groundsheets, and all the other wacky ways people get their shared weight down. Fair warning that we're unlikely to buy a non-Feathered Friends sleeping bag, but I'm still interested in hearing about what's out there, including homemade solutions.

Special: Club Campout • Sauer's Mountain 27 May (easy hike, sunday "morning")

10 hours 41 min ago
Sauer Mountain (elevation 3116') is about 6 miles & 2000' gain. it's supposed to have great views; it's a private mountain & trail maintained by the couple that owns the land.

recent reports here:
http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/sauer-mountain
get map here: http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=26908

leaving late morning sunday (if we're at the trail by 10 i'd be shocked), this will probably just take a couple hours. my plan is to head back to seattle after, i can either give folks a ride to the city or drop people off back at the campsite.

Special: Club Campout • intermediate hike saturday 26 may

Mon, 05/21/2012 - 23:24
hullo --

i'll organize an intermediate hike for saturday, but i haven't figured out where yet. expect on the order of 4000' gain, 8-10 miles, and 8 hrs car-to-car, as in Icicle Ridge or some such. post if you're interested!

you'll want warm boots and might as well carry snowshoes or crampons for traction. helmet & ice axe are never amiss, but i don't anticipate needing them.

don't forget to sign up for the campout here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlPReidsoCu-dF9oREFEZVR1bGczbmNUSjV0REYwVEE#gid=0 (general campout info here: http://students.washington.edu/climb/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=6880)
