In honor of Amittai's diligent posting of the awesome adventures of soggy winters, I send the following dispatch from Scotland: (For context, I've seen people carrying touring skis on the train, and the climbers are having a relatively sad time of it - high temps low down, gale force winds and snow up high. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum etc etc):

So I headed over to Edinburgh for research with waterproofs, boots and crampons, an optimistic attitude, and climber friends in Edinburgh. My climber friends in Edinburgh have no interest in the perpetually truly atrocious weather in the Highlands (even more impenetrable than usual, and the few tolerable days since I got here have fallen during the work week). Unimpressed with their reticence, I assessed that the snow and rain showers and 50 mph gusts forecast for the Cairngorms (accessible by train from Edinburgh for a shorter day drip) were better than any of the other weekend days so far, so declared my independence, borrowed an ice axe and headed off to the hills via train. The following is a picture of the view from my turnaround point on the upper plateau of The Fara (a 950m hump above the tiny hamlet of Dalwhinnie and its distillery):

What you can't see in this photo is the horizontal snow and wind gusts knocking me about, nor the sparkly snow-whiteout hallucinations impending. When I reached this point, I checked my watch, assessed that it was 2:45, that the Dalwhinnie distillery back past the train station closed at 4, and if I ran down the hill I could make it make it in time for a leisurely tasting. I ran back down the hill, and left an impressive set of puddles on the floor of the posh tasting room with my absolutely saturated gear.

Then I took the train up two stations to a village that actually had a pub, and ate some of the best venison I've ever had. All in all, a win.

Here are a couple of actually illustrative shots of soggy Scotland in winter.

(for some reason modern castle-ettes are not as attractive as old ones)

Agree with Craig, though it looks like our gray and wet might finally be back as well! That's really cool you can take gear on a train and go do stuff.
