It's that time of year again. From Jeff Adamson at WSDOT:

Hi all,

The North Cascades Highway is officially closed for the season. Our avalanche and maintenance folks headed up early this morning to see what 3' of new snow over the past two days had done to the highway. They found unstable avalanche zones and several slides. The largest they got to was below Liberty Bell Mountain - 150' wide by 12' deep.

The determination was made that it wasn't safe to put a crew there to clean up, much less to let anyone drive under those chutes.

For those of you who like statistics - last winter the highway closed on Nov. 20 and reopened this spring on April 16.

Break out the cross country skis and snowmobiles!
