I'm just starting to get into ski mountaineering, and I'm looking for advice on equipment. Specifically:

1) It seems like having a would be essential for skiing the steeper stuff, but are there opinions to the contrary? Also, is one adequate or are two recommended? I feel like managing one in the dominant hand would be easier while skiing, and certainly easier on the wallet. I know it's not a substitution for an axe, but is there ever a time you would consider leaving the axe at home in favor of one or two Whippets?

2) Is it worth it to get ski crampons? I would think the window between skinning and full on boot cramponing where ski crampons would be useful is a narrow one, but I've never used them. Would you ever consider leaving the boot crampons at home and relying completely on the ski crampons?

3) I've often used my sneakers as approach shoes till I hit snow, but do you ever need your mountaineering boot in addition to your ski boots on a given trip?

Thanks!

On my last trip, I found that if your in breakable crust and you're a light guy, going up some pretty steep terrain, ski crampons might actually help a lot. Didn't have them with me at the time, but they're coming with me from now on.

I've never used them but it seems to me that ski crampons might also be useful for moderate angle terrain that is particularly icy. I can imagine a situation where you might want to be skinning but the conditions are a bit too icy for the skins to grip. If you don't use the skis that likely means boots/shoes + crampons, and those crampons are quite a lot heavier, not to mention you would have to be carrying the skis.

You should get a whippet if you plan to ski steep terrain. I have heard several stories where it was either essential to have or would have been really nice to have. I took a long slide, head-first, down Mt. Shasta. It SUCKED! A whippet would have helped me stop much sooner than I did. You only need one.

Yes the whippet is an essential one for skiing in steeper stuff. And ski crampons are one of the most important too. You should take those on yours.
