Sometimes you must cook in your tent. Maybe you're on a portaledge 2000' off the deck, or tent-bound in a ferocious blizzard. No one wants a flaming torch on their $400 sleeping bag, or their dinner all over the tent floor, or the tent going up in flames! So you hang the stove. This keeps it pretty much as far away as possible from you, your stuff, and the tent walls. It also makes it much harder to knock over. Unfortunately stove manufactures are loathe to admit this fact, and very few actually sell hanging kits - to do so would be to tacitly condone cooking in the tent, which they can't do.

I've long used an MSR WindPro because it enables me to use an isobutane fuel canister flipped upside down. This has huge advantages for stove performance that I won't get into here. The point is that it seemed like a very unwieldy contraption to rig a hanging kit for. Well, turns out all I needed was a little free time and motivation.

Very cool. Planning to bring this to the Waddington range?

Yep, Waddington was the motivation. I think we'll probably bring a whisperlite for base camp cooking, and this baby for multi-day routes and uber-bad weather days.

Awesome. Although, what's the reasoning behind all those steel rings? Why not have the steel wire loops directly around the wisperlite's legs and the nylon accessory cord tied directly to the canister holder. Might be able to shave a couple extra grams. :)

Nice work! Hopefully we won't have to test this too often.

Great job, looks cool! How long is the whole thing? I was just wondering how it compares to the height of a typical inner tent.

Frank, I think it's about 30" long in total. I was designing it thinking specifically of the 42" of headspace that the Black Diamond bivy tents have (42-43").

Very cool, Obadiah. I've been debating adding a WindPro to my stove arsenal and I might have to get one now just to have a cool project to work on ... and see if I can shave a few grams off your weight :).

Is that heat exchanger built into the pot? Have you noticed an increase in efficiency using it vs. a standard pot?
