Has completely changed the way I eat in the mountains. As light as freeze dried without the funny orange aftertaste to everything.

Particular favorites are the Cranberry Chicken and Italian Chicken.

Recommend taking a second zip-loc for cooking - from time to time the main bag leaks and it's not really fun to have to sleep in chicken soup.

I second freezer bag cooking.

I use salmon instead of the chicken for cranberry salmon. Yum!

Here's my modified Italian couscous recipe:

In a freezer bag, combine:
-1/3 cup plain couscous
-1/4 cup dried vegetables
-1/4 tsp pepper
-1/2 tsp salt
-1 Tbs dried onion
-1/4 tsp basil
-1/4 tsp oregano
-1/4 cup low-moisture parmesan cheese

In camp, pour in 1 and 1/4 cups boiling water and a 4-6oz packet of chicken if desired. Insulate, and wait ~5 minutes before consuming.

This is a portion size calibrated to my appetite, so unless you're 6'4" with a weirdly high metabolic rate, you'll likely want to reduce it somewhat.

I was wondering what were good sources in town for the dehydrated food items called for in these recipes?

Was recommended this place by a friend, but have yet to try them out. The bulk section looks promising - they even have Chablis wine powder!

Adventure Foods, Inc.

It's a Mom & Pop (Sam & Jean) shop out of North Carolina that has a full range of freeze dried foods. Call and tell them what your planning on doing and the friendly owners will give you food suggestions.

here are a few more recipes that Grace and I enjoyed on our trip to Kenya:

*Spicy Beef & Tomato Couscous*

In a quart freezer bag:
- 1/4 cup cooked and dehydrated hamburger or 'beef' (TVP)
- A few diced sun-dried tomatoes
- 3/4 cup couscous
- 1 1/2 tsp low sodium beef bouillon
- 2 Tbsp dried onions
- 1 Tbsp dried chives
- 1 Tbsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin seed
- 1/2 tsp dried minced garlic
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tsp salt

Also take 1 Tbsp olive oil

FBC method:
Add the oil and 1 1/2 cups near boiling water and stir well. Seal tightly and put in a cozy for 10 minutes. Fluff up. Salt to taste, if desired.

Serves 2.

*Spanish Rice*
-1/2 cup minute rice
-1 cup black bean flakes
- a few sundried tomatos
-1/2 cup TVP
-1/2 low moisture parmasan cheese
-1 tsp salt
-1/2 tsp cumin powder
-1/2 tsp garlic flakes
-2 tsp onion flakes
-1/4 tsp cyanne pepper
-1 tsp salt

In camp, pour in 1 Tbs oz olive oil, and water to the desired consitency. Let stand 5-10 Minutes in a cozy.
serves 2+

What do you guys mean by insulate or place in a cozy? I was looking at different recipes and most said something along the lines of place it in a cozy for 15 or so minutes. Is this like your beanie or coat? What do people use?

I usual use either my puffy jacket or sleeping bag as a "cozy". However, I also carry a spare gallon freezer bag and put my hydrating dinner inside it in case the quart bag springs a leak (has happened!).

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I have run into another snag in my quest for a FBC meal. Where do you find packets of chicken? I think Ive been to every single grocery store and have only found one variety that looks rather dull.

Safeway has chicken packets nestled in with all the tuna amongst the "canned" meats. You actually don't want "exciting" chicken. Just get the plain, dull stuff and let the spices in the freezer bag do the flavoring.

The salmon, in the same section of the grocery store, works very well in some recipes too.
