Big question of the day: is it called Tie-eton or is Tee-ton?

Nick, Rok, Daryl, Obadiar, Frank, Evan, and I took the long, dry drive down to the Tieton River Gorge on Sunday in search of some dry climbing. We mostly succeeded.

After a brief stop for gas in Yakima where someone may or may not have been trying to buy Daryl's car, we reached Tieton around 11 am and headed up to some basalt columns. After discovering that the Rock Climbing Washington book was pretty much worthless up close, we managed to borrow a guidebook from some other climbers and in short order were thrutching our way up routes. For Nick, Rok, myself, and Daryl this was either or first (or nearly first) time climbing cracks. Many thanks to Obadiah, Frank, and Evan for their helpful advice on technique.

After lunch, and a brief tutorial on placing gear, Nick, Rok and I managed our first gear leads on some 5.easy (in opposition to the first 5.awkward) climbs of the day. Around 5:30, the long-promised sun came out, but then 15 minutes later sank below a hill.

Finished up the day with pizza, beer, and trivial pursuit at Village Pizza in Rosslyn.

Great day out and good times had by all.

Others probably have some good pictures, my camera stayed in the bag nearly all day.

My father is a native and resident of the Yakima/Zillah/Selah area and claims that it's pronounced Tie-it-en. The key seems to be in deemphasizing the third syllable to the point where it becomes a mere "N."

By the way, good job on the climbering.

I had a really good time as well, both due to the climbing and the company.

Here's my full trip report with a bunch of the photos I took.

Nice work you guys. It's always fun to get your first lead on gear in.

Thanks a lot for the beta on gear placement, guys! ...and chance to lead on borrowed gear! I was totally stoked about my first crack climbs and trad leads. Now if only i could get that next pay check and buy some pro of my own! I took only a few photos, which are at www.astro.washington.edu/cowan/trip_rep ... eton_river

sweet, my 15 seconds in the sun got caught on film twice!! Thanks guys! It was a fun day of leisurly climbing, thanks for the good company... I've been meaning to visit Tieton for a while and I think I prefer it to Vantage, but maybe the fall colors made it particularly picturesque... regardless, a fun place to go for sure.
