What if there were a UWCC , editable by members to add club info, planning, and route conditions/beta? It would allow superior organization and presentation of useful club-related and semi-persistent information. Supposing that it contained (among other things) climbing knowledge and route information--would it present an increased liability, or would strong disclaimers be enough?

I take it you've seen the VOC wiki? www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Main_Page
I think this would be a great way to make useful info public. In principle, it seems that wiki would have less liability issues than a website, since a wiki is not necessarily being written by club officers. . .

Ok here is a test wiki that I set up on my student account. (edit: no longer necessary)

Right now it should authenticate using the , but perhaps (if adopted) it could share authentication with this forum.

I'll leave it to the officers and other members to decide whether it's worthwhile.

this seems cool, justin. I wonder, however, how much we'd gain from having a wiki in addition to the forum? I guess they could be seen as serving two entirely different functions.

I think a forum and wiki are complementary. A wiki could be a good resource for hosting route information. In some sense, forums (fora?) like this one and cascadeclimbers do not do a good job of organizing and providing information about climbing routes/areas. For example, if I want to climb triple couloirs, and am looking for beta, I have to do a search and then wade through all manner of spray to get information about a route -- and even then it's buried in a trip report.

The purpose of a trip report is generally to provide a narrative about a particular climb, as well as recent conditions information, but isn't a great way to accumulate knowledge like: what sort of rack to bring, approach details, route details, etc. Obviously, there is a resource for that kind of information, and it's called a guidebook. But even these resources are sometimes lacking. I love the Beckey guides but sometimes would like a little bit more info.

One factor for wiki success is accessibility -- you need lots of authors/editors to make them work well. It seems like restricting access to UW only will likely overconstrain the community of potential contributors, resulting in a dearth of high value content...

Yes it would definitely depend on people taking some extra time to commit information, so that is the poster's prerogative. I think that it was easy enough to set up that we might as well have one; that way it's there if anyone feels like using it.

For example, I thought about taking a camera next time I go out to the UW Rock...

yeah, I totally agree with you Ben - finding route beta from trip reports is a minor nightmare. I think the wiki would be a good addition, but it shouldn't be completely public (not to do edits at least). Justin, do you have a sense of how the authentication can be shared with the forum authentication?

This forum appears to be running off of cascadeclimbers.com; I'm not sure of the history of how or why that is (aside from my guess that it's performance-related). It would be best to have things all running from the same place, but I don't know how everything is set up, who is 'in charge' or has access to the server running this forum. Who is/was(?) the UWCC server admin?

yeah, I need to start working on moving the forum to a place on UW campus. I think that will make a lot more sense. I thought I could do it after I came back from new zealand, but I'm swamped with teaching now, so it will probably happen over the summer. I'm not sure about the details of using an SQL server in the university web space.

I had to set up MySQL for the test wiki. CAC actually had some good basic how-tos for gettings things running on the UW servers.

One potentially attractive thing about the UWNetID system is that it might allow for more accountability in cases of misuse (fraud, spam, porn, etc.). Also, I verified that alumni can keep/get UWNetID's.

cool, I wasn't sure if they would allow mysql or not. but I guess I should've figured they do since you set up the wiki on a university web site... i'll look into it as soon as i can get my head above water.

My opinion is if the board ain't broke, don't fix it. If we move it to UW, we might get disk/bandwidth use issues. You could probably set up a wiki on uw.cascadeclimbers.com too...
i gave mike the login info a while ago.
