Kris, Mel, Michelle, and I climbed at "Europa" a new crag being developed by Bryan Burdo on the walls between Gate Creek and Goat Creek along Lost River Road. Very cool crag with similar rock to Prospector Wall, but with more locations to hang out and be social. Since there's no topo for the area, we did a little recon on Saturday (to convince ourselves we could find the place) and talked to CB at the Goat's Beard (new climbing store behind the General Store - well-provisioned, check it out the next time you're there) who sketched out a few of the routes.
We climbed six routes on one buttress - generally in the 20 m range - ranging from 5.5 - 5.10a. All were pretty good, with the 5.10's being the best of the bunch. We then headed uphill to the "Dragon's Head", which is a wild looking prow. To its right is a headwall with a few routes lower down (a 5.4 and 5.10a/b) and a four-star 5.10b that heads up an easy slab and then swings out on to the face of the headwall, crossing a number of dihedrals. Never very difficult, but thought provoking and a full 30 m adventure.
Lots of other routes up there either complete or under development. Limited loose rock (though Mel did pull off a football sized chunk), but definitely bring your wits and your helmet. There should be photocopied topos at the Goat's Beard this week (guide book not due out for at least another year), but I'm also drawing up a few pencil sketches.
Definitely good times had by all.
