A good crew of 9 UWCCer’s and friends of friends spent two days at The Bend on Tieton. The goal for the weekend was to lead and/or TR a bunch of 5.10 cracks. This was a raging success with a “festival of top-ropes” as Kellie put it. A few of us would put up a rope, then we’d all run a lap on these ropes (sometimes even a couple laps). If possible we’d swing the rope over to another (harder) route once we were all done. You can get a lot more routes in this way. By 6:15pm on Saturday night we were thoroughly exhausted. We stayed at Windy Point campground and had a pseudo potluck that night. Basically, Adam, Ameila and I combined pasta, veggies and sauce ingredients for a massive pot of everything pasta. Heather and Dave made up some stir fry veggies and meatballs. Yum. Staying in a campground rather than dirtbagging it is out of the ordinary for me, but this campground is nicely maintained, spacious and empty. I think that I’ll keep making an exception to my no campgrounds rule when I go to Tieton.

By morning, I realized that I had one major fail. No coffee! Luckily, Tom is now set with a sweet Westfalia van equipped for every possible situation. He kindly brewed up a large Starbucks coffee complete with a Starbucks cup. What a treat, when my nearest Starbucks would have been Yakima!

We hit the Bend again on Sunday (this time staying on the Eastside vs. the West that we’d climbed on Saturday). There are so many great 5.10 routes here, this place is still far from climbed out for me. After the Bend, there’s still more to be had at Royal columns, Moon Rocks and Wildcat Wall (and even more sport climbs, but that’s not what I’m here for).

The other amazing thing about the Bend is that with so many great climbs, the place is still empty. I didn’t see a single other party on the wall all weekend, but our group. Judging by the occasional car in the parking lot, there may have been a party or two that came for the super classic 5.8, Ed’s Jam, but that was it.

The snakes are out in full force. We saw three on the hike in alone, then three more were spotted over the rest of the weekend.

Thanks everyone, for coming out to Tieton, leading the hard stuff, setting TRs and having fun!

Tom’s 5.9 warmup

Adam (rope gun) putting up a tricky 5.10 roof

Amelia following the tricky roof

So many cams!

Kellie climbing yet another finger crack on the Westside of the Bend

Heather and Dave putting up People, Places and Things, a stout 5.8 warm-up Sunday morning.

Tom on another stout 5.8 warm-up with cool stemming, jamming and chimneying.

Me working out the moves on People, Places and Things (my little 5.8 project at the Bend).

Heather leading up Eat a Peach, a fun 5.7.

Adam puts up a tough 5.10b, reported back as a “stinker of a climb”, the kicker was no anchors at the top, so he had to search around for a way to bring up Amelia.

Adam finds a safe perch and some rap anchors and brings Amelia up.

Looks like lots of awesome climbing! Boo finals. Oh, and broken foot too. I want to climb so badly!

More pictures! Favorite climb of the day: Living in the City 5.10c!

Looking up MX, a challenging 5.10a that Dave led cleanly. I managed to follow it cleanly, too!

Big view of The Bend, which we indeed had all to ourselves! Dave and Tom in foreground.

Dave is loathe to leave the comfort of the nice ledge on the 5.10c Living for the City.
