On Sunday, Michelle and I headed up to Mt. Erie for a day of climbing. This was my first trip to Mt. Erie and it quite exceeded my admittedly low expectations. I'm looking forward to more trips up that way in the near-future.

We decided to climb at the Summit Wall and Lookout Wall. Rather surprisingly, we were able to locate the Summit Wall with a bare minimum of shenanigans from the upper parking area.

We warmed up on "Open Book" a Mt. Erie classic 5.6 open book gear-lead to a set of chain anchors. Fun moves in the book, though a tad polished. Had a surprise encounter with a small green frog in the crack that I thought was some sort of cookie (Michelle mistook it for a leaf).

We then moved over to "Jack of Diamonds" a 5.6 (gear) to the right of "The Nose". Harder moves off the deck that ask for a helpful spot, then easier climbing to another set of chain anchors. With the anchor established, we proceeded to top rope "Queen of Diamonds" (5.7) and "King of Diamonds" (5.6). All three had interesting moves lower down. "Queen" looks like it would be a bit devious to protect, with thin protection until you top out 30' off the deck. The harder moves at the bottom of "King" can be quelled by stemming against a giant pine and protection opportunities look good. "King" is not in the current guidebook, but is at least as good as the other Diamonds.

From here, we headed down and over to the Lookout Wall for some slightly harder climbing. We first tackled the 5.9+ with the infamous "rattling hold" on the left side of the crag. Helps to bring a few pieces to protect the 20' "highball" to the first bolt, but then very generously bolted to the chains at the top. All solid 3/8" hardware in excellent shape. Very fun climbing. We then moved over to lead "Lightning Waltz" 5.10a, which is all bolt protected. Thought provoking sequences, but very fun. I had to cheat a little at the top, by moving right off the face onto blockier terrain.

We rounded out the day with a short communication cluster (I went to the top of the wall to meet Michelle, while she scrambled down to the bottom of the wall to meet me) and a stop at the Snow Goose farm stand which serves ice cream cones that really are too large to be a good idea.

In general, I quite enjoyed the climbing at Erie. The grades are somewhere between Index and 38 in that 5.7 takes some thought, but doesn't result in too much grunting and swearing. The routes have a somewhat alpine feel with the great views and sometimes devious protection. Looking forward to checking out other routes in the area. Good suggestion, Michelle.

Did you try to eat the cookie? (I'm assuming Michelle didn't try to eat the leaf...)

Glad to hear Snow Goose was further enjoyed! If it's possible to enjoy ice cream at that scale

Also have been pleasantly surprised by Erie this year. Would happily climb more of it.
